There is an awesome blog you should scour for ideas and inspiration! I immediately thought of this when I saw you call it a "Brady Bunch" house. :)

They have the same style house and they have done an amazing job with the exterior!

Good luck!

Dream House? Good Questions

You need formal training from a IIDA/ NKBA accredited school. The advantages here are that you take classes that specifically train you in the latest code and best practices in Interior Design and these courses usually provide a special class that devotes a whole semester to recreating the NCIDQ exam that you take to become licensed.

Its one of the hardest exams - a few of my professors failed twice before completing it. A lot of professionals spend years in the field and take the exam, only to fail. It has little to do with experience and mostly deals with codes, listening to directions, and the time limit is what fails most people.

Good luck!

Alternate Paths into the Interior Design Field? Good Questions

Oh my goodness! What a coincidence! I was having this same concern hanging my nursery frame collage just yesterday.

One thing I made sure of was to anchor the screws. Much more time consuming than nails, but nothing would make me sleep better (ha! newborn?) than knowing his little head would not be hit with stray frames.

For one piece that was particularly heavy, I made sure that the bottom of the frame was almost behind the crib rail so that if it did manage to fall off of the anchored screw, it would just fall behind the crib. Whew! I felt so much better!

Good luck!

Divide the area using the "natural divides" of the space - such as those small edges that separate your foyer from the living room.

With those two larger areas, begin to again separate the space using furniture - long sofa + two arms chairs with low storage ottoman in the middle, etc. Work in "layers" by placing large furniture pieces like bookcases and sofa, then rugs, lighting/lamps, artwork, books/accessories, storage baskets.

You have a great space to work with and it will probably evolve naturally the longer you live there. Invest in great, functional pieces that you know will work in another apartment, too.

Good luck!

Incidentally, with the CC system - obviously your credit score goes through the roof. We just got our brand new car and got thousands taken off the price because both of us had such high credit scores. It works out so well in the end if you can handle CCs

I agree with past comments - the "cash" system has never worked for me. If it's there - I will spend it, no doubt!

My husband is an accountant and has showed me the light :) we use our credit card for everything... EVERYTHING - we also watch the online statement like hawks. At the end of each year we get 3-5% cash back and our CC provider issues automatic one year warranties on all large purchases (for example we got an extra warranty from the CC provider on our Mac desktop we just purchased. Saweet!)

The key to success is prompt payoff at the end of each month. Never spend more than you have. We are debt free and make money off each purchase. Woot Woot.

I have heard the snow trick through many industry professionals and rug artists in Europe. I swear by it!

It is the safest and purest way to lift dirt from the fibers. Beating rugs is so harsh and can break down the fibers and backing.

Also, be sure to know what your rug is made of before you clean! The nicest rugs are usually made of wool or some even have silk fiber. Wool naturally resists stains and requires special attention to prevent matting and breaking fibers.

Like the post says - always clean them professionally at least once a year!

I agree in that these look to be just simple boards and ribbon/ strap system to me. Which is a great Idea for a renter.

Instead of ribbon, try to find some other secure binding at a hardware store - leather would be great if you could find it. Secure the shelf to the strap and secure the straps to the wall with screws+anchors if your walls aren't as structurally sound as you would like.

I'd always be careful setting larger items (your flour pot and utensil storage) on here without making sure to secure the shelf as much as you can in the wall. Studs are best!

Good luck!

Placing an arrangement of sofa and chairs perpendicular to the fireplace wall and tv center makes a nice "square" shape that will be welcoming to visitors for a place to chat and can utilize the space equally.

I would hesitate mounting the TV above the fireplace. In my opinion, it distracts from the function of the fireplace (which, WOW, mantel space to spruce up for holidays! score!) and you already have a functional TV unit that you love...

You're lucky to have such a nice place! Good Luck!

Also - wrapping you cords up on a stiff piece of cardboard or large plastic spool makes each year a cinch to put up lights.

Also be sure to remove lights so that the appropriate male/ female outlet end is available to be unrolled the next year- this is for multi strand trees (we do a 14 ft tree = lots of strands).

Merry Christmas!

What a great idea! Unfortunately, as many people have already made note - what a cleaning disaster! This defeats the purpose of the backsplash, though. A paint and sealant could have inexpensively solved this problem.
But kudos for an innovative idea!

For deer mounts - depending on size and condition of the mount - please just resist the urge to hang it above the fireplace. I know it seems like just the "proper" place to put it. But it rarely is done right and proportions are usually off, making the mount look smaller and more strange.
Try putting it in an office or family room displayed on a wall of frames proportional to it's size. This will add interest but not make it the focal point of a room.

This made me laugh pretty hard! But what a great question! I feel like this happens a lot to people. I have had clients that receive/ collect the strangest things (mangy deer heads from grandparents?).
These can be great conversation pieces, but I agree with not making it a focal point.
The idea of pairing it simple with artwork or picture frames up a staircase or down a hallway will make for an interesting statement without making a really big, fishy statement.

Good luck!

Painting the walls one color would be a great start - I get the whole "accent wall" but what are we trying to accent with that green? Go same color and it will really make that great view the focal point.

The Kirby Bitter fabric looks like a great choice! Nicely chosen. Relatively neutral with some interesting pattern.
As far as the table goes - opt for a wooden pedestal table of about the same dimensions. Square + bench seating = corner to the stomach/ child head :) give the table interesting dimension with a distressed paint job - keeping colors white and light.

And fill those shelves with colorful cookbooks and pumpkins or something! Good luck!

Since you said that you want to be able to pull the set out and use it when guests arrive, I would say that makes things really difficult!
If you put either the spread or cases anywhere in the room they will fade or wear unevenly. Then, when the set is on the bed, it will show very visible uneven wear.

Try storing the duvet/ blanket in a cool dry place and using the pillow cases as throws, as suggested by other commenters. You can always use different pillow cases in coordinating colors.

Good Questions

This is a great question, seeing as how most people would respond, "A modern platform bed? Ikea!" The problem with Ikea, is their construction is not as quality as with other places.
In wood construction on a platform bed, you want to look for solid wood and high quality joint construction. No glue or flimsy tacks, but screws or nails.
In buying any piece of furniture - flip it over! Look underneath, literally at the nuts and bolts. Make sure it is not squeaky/creaky/ wobbly.

The orange - I'm sorry - should definitely go. Its overly stimulating in that it is bright orange and seems to be made of some unfortunate shiny pleather (?) material.
Get a neutral loveseat and add punches of color with soft pillows and throws and artwork. These are simple and easy to change out while adding the "cozy factor".
My personal favorite for cozy is adding candles and fresh flowers! Good luck!

Ah! One of the ultimate dilemmas. Claw foot tubs are wonderful and beautiful! A few things to consider are the weight- those puppies are heavy and you may have to look into reinforcing your sub floor to accommodate the tub. Expensive.
The other problem is actually using it :) who has time for baths? Would you really use it enough?
