i think pillows and rugs fall under the upholstery category and wouldn't be allowed. How about a foldable patio lounge chair? It would be good if you want to relax and read a book - maybe bring a pillow and a blanket. You can easily fold it up and put it away when necessary.

I'd leave it as is and not polish the brass - It may get too shiny. I think that the tarnished brass looks good with the glass. a shade in your choice of colour (but not a bright colour) with some texture in the shape of the one in the athropologie link would look good.

spray the brass matte black, then decide if you want to spray the wood black too

My friend has a log installed as a handrail at his furniture store. Initially he had spay painted it white and it looked amazing. For a change, he later sprayed it black and it looked even better.
