Years ago my cousin and his wife adopted a llama in my name, and while I always loved the things he had picked out for me in years past, I liked that he was encouraging me to think beyond myself and my wish list. Last year I bought a desk for child in his name (he's a teacher), and his face lit up. I know what I'm doing every year now!

Whenever I finish a book and that sense of mourning comes over me, it's not so much about finding another book as it is the motivation for reading another book. I feel stuck and think nothing can be as good as what I just finished (all 5 Game of Thrones books in 6 weeks, a 200-page a day addiction; anything of Hilary Mantel's), so I switch genres entirely and go read a graphic novel or non-fiction. David McCullough and Doris Kearns Goodwin know how to make history enrapturing. Then I can go back to the list of classics I still haven't read or Amazon's suggestions.

Crate and Barrel does have lovely sets of dishes that you can plan on seeing for years to come, but also check out Fishs Eddy for something more playful. They certainly have a polka dot set! Their stuff is sturdy as well, and you can plan on seeing most of their collections for awhile.

For a "Mad Men" party this weekend I scoured my grandmother's "Joy of Cooking" for recipes. I made the almond jelly roll cake, filling it with my own Apricot Amaretto Jam. It was hit!

Chicken wild rice soup is my favorite, and what I would always get at Byerlys growing up. One friend had it as the appetizer course at his wedding and the rest of us in our group are now all intent on doing the same. Go MN!

Half my spice collection is part of a pristine display on a magnetic board, each labeled in chalk and in alphabetical order. The other half is in a rather jumbled drawer of my Elfa cart that serves as my pantry. There are, at least, two sections: cooking spices and baking spices. How this organization mirrors other parts of my life I am choosing to ignore.
