I like the idea!

It could look very cute, especially if the chairs have a tweed jacket type of upholstery already. You would need to make sure they are perfectly even and both lined up the same. Test the idea with the patches and double sided tape?

My first thought looking at the pics was that I hope you tested to find out whether or not the popcorn ceilings contained asbestos before you started chipping away at them. Please say you did!

What a huge amount of dusty mess - can't wait to see what you end up with once the dust settles.

I love the huge, low, designer sofas. You know, the $15,000 ones that can seat 8 people at a time. We settled for one large enough for 2 people to comfortably take a nap.

I agree with Stecko. I would suggest warm gray or pale blue wall color. Definitely get rid of the blinds. If you must have window coverings for privacy, use white linen curtains. That will help make your white appliances work better with the dark cabinets. Declutter your countertops for sure. I also think the table and chairs would look a lot better with a coat of paint - they could be white, or white table and red chairs... or white with the legs dipped blue (especially if you do blue wall paint).

How Do I Get Expensive Looking Kitchen Upgrades on a Budget? Good Questions

1. I actually like the look of good wall to wall carpet. It can be very luxurious and practical. It's critical to have it professionally cleaned twice a year though, which not enough people do. I have allergies so carpet is never the right choice for me.
2. I buy leather things so I don't want to be too judgy, but to me the animal shape is a deal killer, and the woven or tile style ones are not my style.
3. Fake plants - there are just better alternatives out there. Wood, stone, textiles - all can give a feeling of nature without resorting to fake.
4. Painted wood - I like painted wood but I think it's a crime to paint over wood that was intended to be shown off. A rare or antique piece should be left original unless it's so damaged it can't be restored.
5. Art reproductions - again, there are better alternatives out there. If one really must have a Monet print, please DO NOT frame a poster that includes the word MONET across the bottom -- any text about the artist or museum should be trimmed off and/or matted out.

I don't tape in general. I do use a painters edge and keep a supply of clean, damp rags handy.

The one thing I do tape is hardware. It's best to remove hinges and knobs, but sometimes not worth it. So if I'm not removing them, I tape them up like a mummy. I also use artists brushes to get into tight spots.

Smart move putting the added storage up top, including counter seating, and adding a W/D. The counters are gorgeous. If it were my kitchen (which it's not, and this is just my own style) I would have gone for a streamlined look with all flat-fronted white cabinets with recessed pulls. That way all the cabinetry reads as one solid plane, which would expand the space by not stopping the eye. I find a lot of full shelves, glass panes, books and things very visually distracting and usually try to tone it all down as much as possible. Meh, different strokes.

Usually I think harmonizing the tone of the walls with the color of the floors is most important. But color is entirely dependent on light, so I think the best guide is to figure out what kind of light you have.

I thought you were going to say that your contractor disappeared in the middle of the demo. That's the #1 reason for slow/stalled renovations from my experience.

I can't believe you did all the demo work yourselves. Very brave!

A lot of fiber is not a good recipe for a comfortable flight. I prefer pasta salad or a big fluffy roll - puts me right to sleep. And I know people who bring smelly foods onto airplanes don't actually care about other people's comfort, but I have to say it --

PLEASE do not bring smelly food onto airplanes!!! You can forgo your super garlic sauce for one meal.

I am so delighted that your story mentioning cavemen is not about the Paleo diet! It's a luxury to have exactly what you need and to get rid of everything else. That's when you have an edited home.

When I can't afford what I need I tend to hang on to what I've got. And when money is tight, I start buying in bulk.

I suppose the real answer is to be content with what you have.

Nice! I wonder how many other people do what my husband and I do: walk around the store trying to say all the names in a goofy Swedish accent, laughing like little kids? Yeah, we're *those* people.
