Excellent call removing that plastic white fence. This looks great.

Before & After: Bare Backyard Turned Lush Patio

I gave up on a house with no electrical issues and a porch. The electrical issues I had were fixable and my backyard more than makes up for my lack of a porch.

Clampers, the lime green window was the window from the old shed that previously stood there. The whole story is here: http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2012/02/i-will-get-my-offbeat-green-however-i.html

A feng shui expert once told me that books are like "tiny knives pointing at you" in the bedroom. I don't even believe in feng shui and yet I haven't been able to store books in my bedroom since!

I'd run wires from the top of the wall back to your roof line so you can run outdoor lights or lanterns across them for a ceiling of light at night. I agree with keeping a tree in a large pot and planting the area with ferns or shallow rooted plants. I might hang an old window painted in a bright color on the wall, if you don't want to paint the whole area.

And lots of vines (though no ivy--it's invasive and there are much prettier ones to be had). You could do something fun with bamboo panels (available in any garden department) either on the floor or along the walls.

Check out Armitage's Vines and Climbers. There are thousands of beautiful and non-invasive vines out there. Or just take a trip to your local nursery and ask them what they like. My personal favorites are scarlet runner beans, clematis, and night-blooming jasmine.

I know someone who composted an old rug. I'm not sure I'd want to grow my veggies in that compost, but it broke down!

When my partner travels for work I revert back to singledom, which means painting walls on a whim and at inappropriate times (11pm on a Tuesday? Why not!), singing along loudly to Once More With Feeling over and over again, and peeing with the door open.

I love the rug and table! And your guests will figure out how to move their chairs in and out, no problem. Because you have that high wainscotting and the room feels so cozy, would you consider a chair that you can see through (like a Bertoia style)? Then you could still see the rug with chairs around it and there would be an openness to the room.

This is not my decorating style but it's really lovely. The paint color is beautiful and it was a great call removing that soffit.

This is a great list. I would add the question, "Where will the overflow valve be dumping?" During heavy rains our barrel fills and the overflow valve dumps water right next to the foundation, which is not what we want.

There's an app called Time Flies that I use to track the last time I cleaned the gutters, washed the shower curtain, or changed the furnace filter. I think combining it with this tip might work perfectly.

We built our first rain garden this fall and you are right: building it isn't hard, it just requires some careful planning. And it's very stressful during that first heavy rainstorm! So far, ours is doing well. *knock on wood*

Here's ours in action, if anyon wonders how they work: http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2011/11/rain-garden-in-action.html

This has been really difficult for me and my partner. He likes traditional and I like modern and vintage furniture. He moved into my house and I want it to feel like home for him. He pretty much says, "I guess it's alright" to almost every piece of furniture I suggest. Every once in a great while we find something that we both like and then the struggling is worth it. I decided that we shouldn't bring anything into the house unless we're both in love with it.

I do all the accessorizing, though. :)

I've been lucky enough so far not to have many needs for a plumber. In the few times that I did, the best ones told me over the phone what they thought it sounded like the problem was, and how I might try to fix it myself if I didn't want to pay them X amount to come out and look at it.

Once they're in your house it's a lot harder to say no to expensive repairs.

I have a Kenmore glass top stove and cook almost solely with cast iron pans. I have had no issues with cracking, staining, or scratching and I bang my pans around quite a bit. I say go forth and cook fearlessly!

The light switch that controls all of our outdoor lights in located 12 inches from the floor . . . in our bedroom. It would require rerunning all the electrical on that wall, so instead of fixing it we use our feet to flip the switch. It actually works pretty well but it's embarrassing when other people notice it.
