i'd say if you can afford to put an elevator in your home you can afford the upkeep. and if you need the elevator go for it. if you want it because it will look cool/ritzy whatever. do not do it. my ex-boyfriends grandmother had elevators in all of her homes, which she needed, but we would ride them up and down for the hell of it and they were so slow. i'd rather take the stairs. as for hiding it, like others have said you can put a door in front of it or make it blend in nicely. I'm sure your architect will have ideas.

it didn't have electronic as a music choice. i didn't really fall into a lot of the categories they had selected for answer. gave me a lot of yellow shades. i hate yellow. i have very pale skin and blonde hair and it does not compliment me in any way. oh well, it was fun to take.

I love pinterest. I do not like that it is linked to my facebook. I want to delete my facebook but cannot because of pinterest. But I do have it set up so nothing feeds information to my news feeds or anything gets posted on my wall because that would be straight up annoying for people. I also do not like that you cannot have a private board that people can't see. A lot of people follow me that I know but don't really keep in contact with (of course finding my account through facebook) and they pin a lot of my stuff. which is all fine and dandy but sometimes I want to be original or I have a present in mind for someone, or I just straight up don't want anyone to know that I want to dye my hair pastel purple (which i just did because of pinterest). I use pinterest because like someone said above if I ever decide to redo my bedroom or kitchen I can look at those pictures and get a common theme from them. I am also addicted to fashion/makeup/hair so I get a lot of new information from pinterest. I don't just pin the picture I go to the site and check out what's on it. I find some new blogs along the way and really learn quite a bit. I feel like people aren't using it the same way as when I first became a member almost a year ago. But whatever, it's just like facebook and twitter and google+ and whatever other social media platform is out there, it'll come and go. I just noticed a site called stylesays.com or something and it is completely similar in format to pinterest but is for clothing and has all the prices and whatnot. I liked it but just thought it was really too similar to pinterest and all it did was take you a site like free people or nordstroms, there wasn't a lot of unknown clothing stores or things I couldn't see by just going to those websites. anyway this has gone on forever. Overall, I love pinterest and I'm going to continue to use it. It would be nice if they changed some of their privacy settings but I think it will come with time because a lot of people have mentioned that to pinterest.

Why Pinterest Won't Be Replacing My Inspiration Wall

i would have to agree with juliaf just because it's the rich neighborhoods doesn't mean they are going to have the best prices at garage sales. i feel like these people think their stuff is worth more so they mark it up even if it came from tar-jay (target). and there's definitely a lot more interesting stuff that's not from big box stores in the 'working' neighborhoods.

and i love when kids are moving out of dorms/apartments. I moved last year and we put a bunch of stuff out by the garbage and droves of cars were stopping by. Unfortunately for them, when I throw stuff out it really is garbage.

lately i've been skipping over house tours from initial photos if they don't seem like a style i'd be very interested in, and at first glance i almost did that with this tour. so glad i changed my mind. besides doing a wonderful job with the interior design your house has great bones. those fireplaces are gorgeous. and i love your four seasons porch. great job!

NO MORE WIRE HANGERS PLEASE!

When I moved in with my boyfriend he had mostly all wire hangers and when I ran out of hangers he would hang some of my clothes up on them. And I kindly told him NO MORE WIRE HANGERS PLEASE. I just can't stand them. so tacky and ugly.

I recently bought a set of black velvet hangers. I love them. Got them from TJMaxx like some of the others. just need to buy like 7 more sets and I'll be ready.

i really don't even want to get in to this debate but what is so wrong with striving for something that you cannot have. no matter how long i save i will never be able to own an eames lounger (at my current state of income). so why should I not try to get it a different way. that's why people are innovative. it's america for god sakes we can all do and buy whatever the hell we want. i for one will not lose sleep at night because my friend got a knock-off handbag or piece of furniture.

I love that when I look at this house the things do not scream Ikea or West Elm or any big box store brand. I like that the things look like they've been selected over time and curated for this home. You've guys have done a wonderful job, and as an aspiring lawyer it's great to know that I could be able to make my home this beautiful as well as have my dream career.

P.S. Your kitchen is my favorite part. I'm a sucker for your stove and Le Creuset bakeware.

@goveg

you are in the exact same situation i was in for two years. i lived with my boyfriend and his two friends. and also a friend of a friend who slept on my couch for nine months and would turn my heat up to 90+ degrees when we were sleeping...but besides that. when it came to chores i didn't expect much. i did the dishes because if anyone else did they would still be dirty. my one roommate was very clean so that kind of helped but my other roommate would come home at three a.m. drunk and hungry and cook a three course meal. so i would get on him when he woke up. i would ask that he clean his mess/take out the garbage etc. and when that didn't work i would yell (which i am not recommending) and still nothing would get done. but by the next day he would do it because he knew i was irked and he knew he was at fault. basically, boys will be boys, just harp on them like you are their mother. or another option is to go on strike. do nothing. i did that once. worked miracles. eventually they will get sick of hair in the sink, the molding dishes, pizzas boxes strewn about, and realize they can't even play their video games without carrying a can of febreze with them. i know it takes a lot on your part because it's disgusting to walk around a dirty house but if you work and go to school full-time it sounds like you won't be there that much anyway, just keep your bedroom clean if it really is bothering you.

younghouselove's blog had wood panelling through much of their house and they painted it a nice bright green, which i know is not everyone's cup of tea but hey it really brightened the place up a ton. their house is also a mcm ranch so i think you'd get a lot of inspiration for their place. and i definitely think that's what you need here, just a little inspiration. and some art.

Good Questions

My old apartment had the following:

Shitty landlord
No water pressure...got worse as time went on
Drafty windows
House was 120 years old
Bathroom that I could shit, shower and brush my teeth in all at the same time (no, it's not as efficient as you would think)
Major mice infestation (bf and roommates would shoot them with BB guns, i know horrible but the buggers wouldn't die or leave)
No washer or dryer (though there were hookups but we weren't allowed to use them because they leaked into the other tenants apartment)
A basement that went from concrete to straight up earth. Hence why the mice were so bad.
No closet in one of the bedrooms (previous tenants took the armoire that was suppose to serve that purpose)
A roof that leaked into my bedroom for literally six months (we nailed a tarp to the ceiling and poked a hole in to so the water would drain into one stream instead of seven)
A front door that was missing a window for six months
$400+ heating bills in the winter
A driveway that was so warped it made my right tire go flat if it was there for more than 2 days..luckily there was off street parking

oh..i could go on for days, and I already have. my new apartment has the exact opposite of all of those things. except i pay pretty much double what I did before. But for piece of mind I would pay anything. Live and learn I suppose. That was my first apartment at the age of 19.

What's on Your "Next Apartment" Checklist?

@aaakid they say canisters work best for hardwood floors because they can get closer to the baseboards and stuff. my mother had always used a canister and she has tile/hardwood in every room of the house but one. she has never complained. I don't have any specific brands to recommend but i would definitely look into a canister over an upright.
