Thank heavens I live in a small building of sane people. We all have a pass key that unlocks the snap lock on all our doors. The other
lock has to be dead-bolted, so we can lock everyone out if someone feels the necessity. I hardly ever do; I have that ad about "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up" on my mind, and I want people I know to be able to get in in case of emergency. One officer of the coop has keys to all apartments in case of flood/fire. Also, I am a notorious key-loser, so neighbors/catsitters/cleaners all have extra keys. I guess I am just a trusting person.

Hmm. Declutter but display sentimental objects? I thought sentimental objects WERE clutter, in the deranged philosophy of the clutter-free! I love my stuff!

"Corporate" art, the generic kind that looks as if it came out of a catalog, by the pound: line drawings of wine bottles, some kind of plant material in a vase, fuzzy prints of landscapes. (This mostly happens in hotels. Panera Bread shops are another example.

Geometrical objects in a bowl on your coffee table. I know your decorator picked them out.

Rooms with no books. (One friend actually told me it was tacky to have books in the living room. Why? Because someone might think you read?)

No guest towels in the bathroom. Do you really want me to dry my hands on your bath towel? Ugh.

Those silly raised glass sinks in the shape of bowls with nowhere to put the soap.

I agree with the under-the-roll toilet paper, but some people feel just as strongly that it is the only way, so I leave it alone.

Pony-skin or zebra=skin rugs. I have the same reaction as if the people had skinned a dalmatian for a rug.

I got 15. Surprised I did that well. Have never worked in any area of the visual arts, though I can match my own clothes pretty well.....

No dog. No car. No fireplace. And I clean the freezer and the drip pans on an as-needed basis, as should you. So there. (This is the first time in a long time that I have felt cleaner than the obsessive/compulsive Apartment Therapy handwashers!)

Clothes you do not wear for six months are probably seasonal. Are you actually telling people to dump 50 percent of their wardrobes every six months? Dumb.

I sort of have neither, or both: My high-riser has a flat network of linked springs that supports an inner-spring mattress.

Five months? Does this idiot buy a new winter coat every year? Draconian. Makes as much a fetish of decluttering as some hoarders do of accumulating in the first place. Let's give de-cluttering a five-month break.

Get real, people. Some of the stuff the list wants you to do three times a month I do three times a year. If that. Clean and sort your pantry/refrigerator every month?
How about every decade? And yet I have not died of ptomaine poisoning yet.......

I keep books at home to read, to lend and to look at. Also, in a small apartment with a long shared wall, I use them as soundproofing.

Best investment I ever made: $225 for a folding table that expands (with a couple of leaves) from half the size of a card table to an actual long dining table that seats 10 good friends. There is a swing-down leg at the center that prevents total collapse. Three to four people sit on the couch, the armchairs are at the head and foot, and four skinny chairs fit on the outer side. Yes, people have to take turns standing up. But they don't seem to mind.

1. Use the dishwasher for dirty dishes, and not just when guests are on the way. Put all the dirty ones in there immediately after use! That is what it's for! The oven is silly if you have a dw.
2. Put out clean towels. In fact, keep guest towels out at all times.
3. Use clumping litter and lots of it and your cat box will never smell bad.
4. I like the removable pet-hair throw idea, but my cat likes to sleep on pillows, so I just remove the pillows.
5. And if you have time, I really like the idea of cleaning the tabletop/toilet. (My TV is in another room.) You should also swipe off the bathroom sink. Just concentrate on the surfaces a guest might actually see/touch.
Confession: In 1994, I had to call a rubbish removal service to clean out my spare room. It held virtually nothing but stacks of paper and magazines I had swept off the table every time company came! For two decades!

Does anybody actually make old-fashioned glass-front secretary desks anymore? With the slanting cover that folded out into a writing surface and a couple of drawers underneath? Suppose you could rewire for a computer. Where else can you display your family pictures? The piano that used to hold them
is already gone.

Snarky comment: 70s cheese domes will probably be collectible in 20 or 200 years and your descendants will mourn your discards. Also, covered cabinets prevent dust/grease from collecting on your china.

Just before my ex decided to move out, he suggested we sell our duplicate books and records. What an idiot I was! I still want my copies back!
l too have several times your total of records, plus CDs, hardbacks and paperbacks. I don't collect them because they are valuable, I use them to listen to and read! One long wall of my house is soundproofed with books. I had to put a bunch of CDs I inherited from a friend into storage, but someday they will come home with me, too. If there were no collectors, there would be no museums.....
