This looks fantastic! I love a good budget makeover, especially for kitchens, and I can't believe how much difference $700 can make. The "after" is so charming, and has so much personality. Great job!

Thank you! I was just thinking this morning that I'm about to lose two buttons from my winter coat unless I do something about it, ASAP!

The items that top our list are:

-desirable and safe urban location (within a quick walk to shops, restaurants, and grocery stores)
-age of home (the older the better)
-original historic details
-parking

Luckily our current home meets all of these requirements. I just wish we had a little bit more space (one more bedroom and a 1/2 bath on the first floor).

This is so cute! I've seen it done as stripes on a wall, but never on dresser drawers. Love it!

This is great! We built a small organic square foot garden over the summer for our city "yard" http://www.oldtownhome.com/2011/5/10/Our-Organic-Garden-Project-Progress-or-Disaster-DIY/index.aspx

...but I never thought to go up instead of out. Great project!

I agree with the comments above that the first nook could use some softening. We have one just like it - a great bay window in the guest bedroom of our house that is just calling out to be a reading nook. But until we can outfit it with cushions and pillows, it will remain a nook and lookout perch for our shar pei / pug mix. I'm sure six pound chihuahas would love it too! :-)

Here's a picture of the nook and the room in their current state:

I ended up at the emergency room one Thanksgiving. Luckily the food was on the table at that point, so I left my relatives to enjoy and my husband drove me to the hospital. It was an evening to remember, but not in a good way!

I would sand the entire piece, going extra heavy on the door edges, and prime/paint it. This piece could look great in a fun, funky high gloss paint.

I've had a lot of success using Benjamin Moore's high gloss enamel oil paint. I recently used it on a trash to treasure transformation and the finish and look is really nice. I love this before and after! It's amazing what a little elbow grease and paint can do to transform someone else's trash.

My husband had a similar reaction when I informed him we were taking home a discarded, paint splattered stool. Luckily he's come around now that he's seen the finished result.

I too love the look of vintage fans, and with the renovation of our master bedroom came the purchase of the Restoration Hardware Allaire Desk Fan in a light aqua to match our decor.

(Seen here: http://www.oldtownhome.com/2011/5/20/My-Design-Philosophy-One-Unique-Item-in-Every-Room/index.aspx - pictured halfway down the page.)

It oscillates, keeps us (and our dog) cool at night, and we even scored it on sale. It's the perfect marriage of form and function.
