I was thinking about using pegboard to hang pots and pans... until I saw Anna's kitchen. I looked, I gasped, and then said: I that cookware hanging from towel bars? I am SO stealing that idea! Anna & Jon's Santa Barbara Craftsman Home House Tour |

I think I would combine Abigail C's and KittyAtlanta's thinking: I'd choose a very pale shade from the brick, for the wall, but I would paint the beams -- and possibly the railings -- the same color. This room seems very dark to me. However, there is every possibility that just painting the wall a coordinating color like Kitty suggested, along with well-chosen furniture and accessories will lighten it up. I would hesitate to paint the vanity a "pure" white. A monochromatic color scheme that uses different variations of white might work in this room, though. One thing that troubles me about the room is the brown tile flooring fights with the simple white with black trim tiling of the tub area. If the flooring is laminate, I would ask the landlord about putting in new laminate tiles (all I can do is "peel and stick") that is a better fit with the other tile in the room. Then, I'd select paint colors using a monochromatic off-white palette. Help! Making My "Horrid" Bathroom Calm & Clean? Good Questions |

Rapunzel, how about: "Making Do with What We Got?" Grammatically incorrect, but I like it nonetheless. And a refreshing philosophical alternative in this country where products are often actually planned to become obsolete before we finish making payments! Making the Most with What We Have |

eveb1123, i am thinking about a diy to ditch the skirt on a sofa like yours. Exact legs -- they are almost part of the frame, right? Did you paint them -- the one's on my sofa are unfinished. Any hints, tips? Potential in Vintage Sofa & Love Seat? Good Questions |

I am going to resist making any comments about conspicuous consumption. I don't like any of these kitchens (and the one with the ladder seems almost dangerous in any household with young children), simply because I like "cozy" kitchens. These are very modern, I guess. Only evidence of a child in this space in the alpha letters on the fridge -- instead of examples of her art. No toys -- and I don't think I see kiddie books either. Good use of space, but it might be like growing up in a Skinner box. (Which didn't hurt Skinner's daughter any.) Space-Saving Solutions in a Family's Tiny Apartment |

You could try something similar to cogg's suggestion. Use a sofa with a table behind it to define the seating space from the foyer area. Lots of good ideas here for a foyer -- mirrors, pictures, etc. That will open up the little "nook" where the couch is now for a different little vignette -- a small breakfast area, desk, game table or a couple of chairs with a table between -- still close enough to sofa for conversation (and TV can be viewed, too). Maybe you could do the wainscotting white and pick up the black from the b/w tile on the trim/railing. Glossy on the trim and matte on the wainscotting. Then a very pale gray or gray-blue for the wall above the wainscotting. I think that will give you a very vintage '20s-'30s look in you bathroom. In addition, I would make a skirt for the sink from a similar toile to the shower curtain... Gives you some hide-away-storage and carries the vintage look along... I am just wondering about window coverings... I can't tell from the picture whether there is sheer fabric or something to give some privacy, especially since kitchen is viewable from the windows. jess13 - i painted kitchen countertops using black acrylic craft paint topped by 3 coats of polyacrylic. Still looking good after over a year. Also painted the cabinets and drawers -- My project ran about $75. But I used Benjamin Moore paint and primer on the cabinets -- expensive. I recently purchased a quart of Valspar wall paint at Lowe's for $17, though. Before & After: $17 Rental Kitchen Makeover HGTV |

All this reminded me of Rose of Sharon feeding that old, dying man at the end of Grapes of Wrath... That said, I nursed my babies, but would not have have expressed milk and made cheese or ice cream for the rest of the family... The act of nursing a baby goes beyond nutrition -- it is about a human bond... That, I think is the basic symbolism in Steinbeck's novel. Seems nursing mother's who donate milk for sick people are evidencing that. I might have done that, if such things had existed back when I had my babies. Making cheese are ice cream, though -- don't think so. 8 Alternative Uses for Breastmilk |
