P.S. Once that Contact is on, though, it ain't coming off so easy, so I would warn other readers to be careful where you use it.....

Cuckoo for Contact Paper Liveblogging the January Cure

Thumbs up on the Contact Paper route, I've just been doing the same at work....resurfacing cabinets and tables with black Contact!! Admittedly they aren't "work surfaces", but it comes up a treat, especially when you can't quite justify replacing a whole piece of furniture! And great for adding a pop of colour or pattern in shelving units...

Oh Julia!! My grandparents (who were wordly travellers) had one of those geisha figurines too!!!!! I was also fascinated by it as a child, and had completely forgotten about it until I saw them on display in a design store here in LA on 3rd St. All those sentimental memories came flooding back, so I understand your connection to it. When I was back in Australia in February, I asked my mum if she remembered it or knew where it was (my grandparents are long deceased and many of their trinkets were stored or given away). No luck, she can't remember, but she promised to check the attic. In the meantime, you can find them on ebay...or vintage stores. I can't believe that they are back in fashion!!! Check it out:

Oh, it's the Molto, just found it on image search, so no need to respond to my question, Kim & George. Looks great and functional I assume, but been discontinued. :( I will keep searching for the next best option!!

Great job, guys, perfect mix of comfort and design, and yes, totally looks party-suitable. But please, I have a question - adore the CB2 sectional sofa, but alas, looks like they don't make it any more. Can you remember the model name?

Feeling empathy for all on this page. Boyfriend and I can't wait to leave our 1920's courtyard building after 18 months of cigarette smoke, blasting tv, screaming 3 year-old twins, door slammers, surround-sound systems, elephant feet...but just so nervous that next apartment building will be more of the same - no guarantees in modern life, right? Might just sit tight until the dream day comes when we can buy/rent a little house of our own....

When things are really bad we remember that we are lucky to have a roof over our head - some people in this world don't even have that. I just wish humans could be a little less noisy at living! ;)

Ok, I'm an Australian now living in West Hollywood....don't be fooled, California is NOT as "green" or as sustainable as you think. I was shocked at the water wastage I have seen every day - people still hose their pavements/driveways/courtyards with hoses, which don't even have trigger nozzles; overblown garden sprinklers creating rivers of wasted runoff straight down the street, even in the middle of a rain spell, and I don't think I've seen one residential water tank. Line drying laundry facilities are rare, from what I've seen; the dominance of the grocery chains (who still will double-bag groceries!) means that local butchers/fishmongers/green grocers are hard to find. Yes, there are "farmers markets" but the actual validity of the labelling of "organic" produce from what I've seen is dubious. Public transport is terrible and the lack of money spent on road maintenance means bike riding is treacherous at best. And, yes, the switch-less power outlets are a trip!

Don't get me wrong, there are some fabulous things about living in Los Angeles and I really dig living here - my opinions are based on growing up living (and owning a house) in an area burdened by drought and tough environmental conditions. Just be aware that all is not what it seems in "hip, groovy, California", at least not around where I live.... ;)

Oh my goodness, me and boyfriend have this discussion ALL THE TIME! Both of us have very long dark hair, but his is the thick type that seems to explode everywhere! I call him "the hair factory". I have had a long haired dog, and I swear, living with the boy is worse for hair!! Should I get rid of him? (Only joking...)

Seriously, the time for us to invest in a decent $300-400 vacuum is coming quick

Was just having similar problems with our vegies and whole bottles of mineral water freezing in the bottom of our fridge!!! Then the freezer/fridge completely went to fridge-heaven one day....the lady that sold us our new (secondhand) fridge gave us some tips, similar to the ones already given above in regards to adjusting temperature settings. She also said to make sure the air vents in your freezer are NEVER covered, so store food towards the center of your freezer. This will ensure the freezer is not overworking. Who knew the science of refrigeration was so complex? Good luck!!

Actually, we did do this with the shop dog here, a bulldog named "Muttley". We got the non-toxic kiddie paints, laid out a drop sheet and lots of bits of nice paper, and let him walk squidgy paw prints all over it. I finished off the paintings with some line drawings over the top and "bingo" - we had collaborative art that we sold to raise money for the bulldog rescue group that saved Muttley's life. In frames they look pretty good too!!!

Awesome apartment! I'll be pinching some of the office storage ideas - need a place for my art supplies too, and the hanging rack/cup thingy is perfect and colourful! And who's the cute fur-kid? Sooooooo handsome.

Anne, you obviously love your house, because you are renovating with honour for it's history. Don't paint the fireplace bricks, they are perfect as they are!! And they match the beautiful original timber features. Bravo, on having a superb eye for good quality Danish teak pieces - they look like they have been beautifully restored too. I inherited a brown kitchen with my old house - and painted it immediately to tide me over until the future kitchen reno. Seriously, it was ghastly!! But your brown kitchen still looks so warm and inviting, and the tile colour really keeps it a bit fresh. Love your house, and Judy is delightful!!

Yes, my new favourite too. Love everything about this house....although the kitchen looked a bit utensil-heavy for me, but we can work on that (wink*). Seriously though, colours, textures, light and shade, art collection and arrangement....just beautiful.

@ merricontrari, the trick is reusing paper or plastic bags - very light, easy to store in your larger shopping bags, and don't affect the purchasing weight. Then you top up your heavier (glass/plastic) containers at home. I have an assortment of these bags ready to go shopping, plus awesome little netting bags for fruit and veg that can go straight into the fridge. Until I find a local co-op (or In.Gredients!!) I have to shop at WF - sometimes they give me a little discount on all the bags I reuse...
