Thanks, guys! Yes, the snow will need filtering so we'll be boiling that first thing. I'm going to go for the chili or Shauna's idea of pre-cooked rice for the jambalaya, I think. No dutch ovens as we have to pack everything in...come on up if you're in Utah!

Thanks, all - I think we'll find a brine and not bother with the fancy presentation so we can get it cooked without drying. This really helps!

BeckyCN - moi aussi. I heart Mark. I make crackers instead of consuming cheese-its because of that man!

I used to live on this rue...that cheese shop was marvelous but such a smell! So many all at once! When Queen Elizabeth came she visited Stohrer and the whole street was packed. It's still open, splatgirl, just ongoing renovations.

I used to live on rue Montorgueil and the man who sold me my chicken every Sunday always asked if he could come eat it with me :) I said no, but he always gave me some potatoes for free. Ah, Paris!

Just got back from a trip to Croatia and Greece. All the food in Croatia was amazing - fresh and CHEAP - but the best food was in Greece. We had a cooking class at Selene (http://www.selene.gr/) and getting to learn about the island produce was fabulous. Good times!

Where can I get a riser like the one pictured above? Looks like the perfect small size for a countertop.

Ilsley is a fabulous wine, run by a great family, too. Worth it!

Just made this - wow! I love the flavors together. Used mozarella that I had on hand instead of goat cheese & it worked great. Thanks for the inspiration.

Huge victorian that's on the national historic register which I totally didn't appreciate. Such fun & full of secret stairways & cherry floors & butler's pantry...

BambiJo, I now fully understand the mantra "to each his own." Writing and sending cards (thank-yous or any thing real in the mail) is one of my absolute favorite simple things to do. Keeping up on correspondence is such a lovely way to slow down, relax, and yet still be doing something productive...the perfect evening activity (can you tell we don't have a tv?). I understand that it's not for everyone - but if I send a wedding gift, I want a thank-you note and not a phone call! It's too much of a burden on me to make small talk when all I want is some recognition. My, I'm picky.

We're having our very last jar of homemade tomato sauce with some little local pastas, and either red or white wine depending on if it snows this evening.

Had these at a party last night, and they were lovely - with one thing: some of them had been made a bit too long, and so getting the pieces off was a little difficult, and the cheese was a bit big for one bite. Great idea, but make sure when in doubt go smaller!

We have a tiny kitchen, and love it, although we are able to squeeze two people in. When cook at my mother's, whose kitchen area is bigger than our entire cottage, it's just too much - too much space, too many things. Small is cool!

HA art! I have said 'relax, have a homebrew' so many times over the course of various bad brews...I don't like beer myself, so we ferment wine for me while making beer for the DH. Mine takes longer, but we get all the ingredients from local fruits, so it's worth it.

We bought the wall holder from IKEA last month, and it's the biggest bang for $3 our kitchen's ever seen. We placed it low on a wall, not in a cabinet, because it would hit the shelves, but works great!

While hiking the entire Appalacian Trail, my husband ate his 'best' meal every night. He started off a long section carrying about ten meals, and ate whatever his 'favorite' was every night--because the next night he would be so hungry, something else would be the best meal! Then it would all start over when he reached the next town. I think this has to do with the scarcity idea...anyway, we've both pulled this out of the woods and onto the dinner table. But we do still eat dessert last. :)
