Yeah, agreed. And you have to be doing extra well if you can afford to contract it all out.

I wonder how much a conceptual pod costs? And I wonder if anyone at the time claimed it was an 'investment' piece.

I wonder if the railing issue might vary greatly on how the person sleeps. I started sleeping in a very high captains bed when I was six or seven (getting into it required a stool) and it didn't have a railing - top of the mattress was level with the edge. It was never a problem. In comparison, though, my friend of the same age had to keep a rail on her normal bed until she was like ten, because she fell out of it relatively frequently and dislocated her elbow once.

I seem to recall kids in college managing to fall out of lofts. They all had railings due to school policy. And smoke detectors. So, I suppose if you're a very rough sleeper (or possibly intoxicated) a railing won't stop you.

Just to add another voice about painting or epoxying the tile - no one has mentioned that if this is the only bathroom keep in mind it will be unusable for a day or two.

When my nieces were born, I gave them each a glow worm, because I loved them as a kid, too. Now, they're into My Little Pony (the updated version), but its still awesome to be able to give them presents that are very similar to what I had as a kid.

But is it weird that seeing things like that still make me happy? I also love the cartoons I watched as a child. They were great.

Have you asked your landlord about it? Resealing the floors should be part of the regular upkeep and maintenance. If it needs to be resealed, request a kind that forms a film over the brick rather than one that penetrates and soaks into the brick. Both make the brick easier to keep clean and prevent stains, but the former will help with the gritty feel and the dust of the bricks.

A very valid point. And even when they're older, they're still kids. Three years ago my nephew threw up a belly full of fruit punch all over my sister's 'investment' couch. It was only about ten years old, and, although still in good condition, they'd moved on from that style so they weren't as heartbroken as they could've been. Sure, they could've reupholstered, but that's another 'investment' of a few thousand dollars to do the chair, couch, and ottoman. Instead, that few thousand went into an expensive leather sectional. They love it, but they aren't thinking of it as an investment in the future anymore. If it only lasts ten years, they still love it. If it lasts twenty, great.

Furniture isn't an investment; it's furniture. It's no an investment than a haircut. There are stylists who charge $12 for a cut and ones who charge $500. Is the $500 cut better quality? Probably. And it may do wonders for your self esteem and make your life better, so in a way you might consider it an investment in your lifestyle. But it isn't an investment.

If it were an investment, there wouldn't be people on here talking about buying used versus new but poorer quality. A good investment shouldn't be depreciating in value. Furniture is more like a car than a house. With very few exceptions, a car is not an investment. Some people will buy the bargain and others will go for luxury and quality, but no one buying that car is investing.

Definitely talk with the neighbors. If they're outside a lot they may already be trying to come up with a solution to make their yard more private, too. We are in the position of your neighbors (being at a higher elevation than the surrounding yards) and its equally uncomfortable in terms of privacy - when I stand in the middle of my yard, I'm essentially at the same height as our fence top, meaning anyone around can see me despite the fence.

If your main concern is them seeing in your windows, definitily look into privacy films. They aren't too expensive, are easy to put on the windows, and have plenty of options in terms of how much privacy you want, and you won't have to wait for anything to grow or undertake a major reno project. Plus, if you think of a great solution later, the film can just be added privacy without making your house look like a compound.

Agreed. They look beautiful, but I can't imagine anyone using the 'offices' on here for more than an hour or so. I try to remember to get up and move around every hour, but even if I doubled that I don't think I'd survive those chairs. Or the set ups in general. I managed with slightly wrong for a couple months and now fight pinched nerves in my elbows - don't mean on your elbows on a hard surface. Lesson learned.

I would love to see more practical (from my perspective, at least. I know these workspaces work well for the people who designed them) offices. Can we get some ideas for multiple large monitors, tons of cords, ergonomics, and the like? And weight. My desk probably has close to 100 pounds sitting on it, so the average IKEA desk isn't going to hack it. Affordable would be great, but that's asking a lot :-)

I want my office to be beautiful like the ones on here, but I haven't found a balance between practical and visually appealing.

We used sharpie to draw on canvases at the painting studio I used to work at. It will definitely bleed through normal acrylic paint, so I wouldn't count on latex to cover it. But a coat or two of Kilz does the trick. That's just what we had at the studio. I'm sure any decent primer would block it.

It's going in your house -- it isn't going in mine, or anyone's here, or your friend's. So why ask anyone else? Are you asking if it will be difficult to paint, or are you looking for validation to purchase the lamp you like? Look, if you like the lamp, buy it. If you want to paint it a color, paint it. You obviously think it will look great, so why are you second guessing yourself?

On the plus side, with all those windows, there isn't going to be any lead based paint.

As someone else with an art degree, is it weird that my first thought was for the people copying this who mistakenly mix water and oil based paints? Because now they've a mess on their hands.

They'll double as art? For $150, they better double as a dishwasher. Sorry, I'm sure that's a perfectly reasonable price for some people. Personally, I cannot fathom spending that much on a cutting board, unless maybe it cuts the food for me...

My thoughts too, Igs. But I couldn't decide if it looked so off because I'm shorter than the average bear. And I know in all likelihood this isn't ever a workspace, but I can't help getting wrist and neck pain just contemplating the ergonomics of it all :-)

I don't work in this industry, but my pet peeve is job postings that don't state salary or compensation. Come on, its a waste of everyone's time - you'll spend time considering candidates who need or want more and candidates will go through the hassle of applying and, potentially, interviewing for a job that doesn't work for them. I know job posters probably think it weeds put those motivated by money or some crap, but it's a job... nearly everyone works for the money.

But maybe that's just in my field. Maybe the Admin job sector is more standard and applicants will be able to accurately predict what this sort of job pays?

Gotta throw my two cents in, too. The kitchen looks like it could be awesome, but I sure as hell can't tell. These "artistic" shots might look cool for details, but its a post about the room renovation, not about one awesome aspect of the room. I can't tell what's where or even what's what. Feel free to throw in a few artsy detail shots - they're cool and they highlight stuff we might've overlooked, but don't lose sight of the fact that its a ROOM! What's that saying about seeing trees and not the forest? I think loads of people would love a shot of the forest. I don't care if they're from the exact same angle (though that would be awesome), but I'd love to be able to get a general feel for the room, at least.

Hah! That was my thought too. Fortunately, it seems the party was on the smaller side. I can just imagine the chaos of keeping 10 four- and five-year-olds from double dipping or putting their fingers in the fountains.

Guess it's good I don't have kids - my version would involve hazmat suits, single use utensils, and guards strictly enforcing single dip rules.

I work out of my home and have for years. For anyone considering it, one of the definite drawbacks is getting others to understand that just because you are home (and, in some cases, setting your own schedule) doesn't mean you aren't working or can just work later. Also, depending on your work, don't expect to have an adorable office like the ones you see on here :)
