A lot of nurseries stock a lot of plants that are popular or profitable, but the nurserymen can generally recommend the ones that will do best in your area and in the microclimate of your garden. It's worth paying for a garden consult even if the master gardener is condescending for suggestions specific to your garden conditions. Why Grow That, When You Can Grow This? The Gardenist |

Wool! Wool socks keep your feet much warmer than cotton. Add a wool or alpaca scarf and hat to your outdoor gear. I even wear a wool or alpaca scarf or cowl indoors sometimes because I keep the thermostat at 60*. If your move is cross country or in a peak moving time one month before may be too late to schedule the day you want for moving. Check as early as you can for estimates. If your first one comes in too high you should have time to reevaluate what you really need to move. Setting Up Home: Moving Checklist |

Once you are out of college I think you should be able to move without expecting your friends to do all the heavy lifting. If you can't afford movers for the whole job then you can break it down. Move the boxes yourself with some help from friends and have movers take the furniture, for example. Get your quotes early and save up the money. In a household of two women who have different design aesthetics there has to be a lot of give and take. When we started dating I noted intolerable bathroom clutter and thought I could change that habit. Not so much. I can have all surfaces clear but only if I do it myself. Daily. Any design decision that puts anything where you would have to open a door or drawer is deemed non-functional. Twenty years later we are still happy, but if something annoys you on first glance don't expect it to change. Would You Date Someone if You Really Dislike Their Style? |

I don't understand why an upholstery shop would be laughing at this request. This does not look like an odd request. If you are in the Boston area I can recommend Cape and Islands Drapery and Upholstery in Falmouth on Cape Cod. Tufting is not likely to be cheap, but for the price of a good pair of new chairs you would have unique pieces. It's not really that hard to do yourself if you are so inclined, just tedious. The design is attractive, but as a smaller person I find aluminum ladders to be much lighter and easier to handle then wood. On the other hand, I AM glad to see that thought is being given to everyday useful items. Simple Genius: A Foldable Ladder |

It's in a good spot for a dry bar, or you could fit it out for a closet with an expandable curtain rod. Although you may find it too small as a work surface, it could still be a computer nook for when you are not in the throes of a project - it's certainly large enough to accommodate wireless equipment like your printer. In a different direction, if you are a plant or fish hobbyist it could be fitted out to suit your hobby. How To Best Use Awkward Built-In Desk? Good Questions |

For long rides in the summer (60-70 miles) flavored water however natural does not cut it. I usually use half strength PowerAde, but in a pinch I have found that half strength orange juice with some added salt will do the trick. Make Your Own Healthy Sports Drinks Beyond Transition |

Don't make a change to the front of the house with out an architect. In the short run it may be better to look at the roof line as a feature rather than a drawback - it's very much a period look. Painting the fascia to match the siding will minimize the odd lines, and thoughtful landscaping will help. Should I Change the Roofline on My New House? Good Questions |

I do nearly all of the housework and yard work because although our financial contributions are about the same I have a lot more time at home to get it done, and I am the one with particular standards. I do have specific requests - squeegee the shower every time, put everything away in the bathroom before you leave in the morning, and if you are cooking something to take to work clean up after it - if I don't get to eat it I won't clean up after it. It works out OK but I do find myself getting pissy if there is no effort to pick up after herself I don't want to nag about things that should be obvious. Housework provides everyone in the house with a pleasing restorative environment and it should be more appreciated. Home Ec.: What is Your Housework Worth? |

For the commenter who wanted a way to have a braid for Christmas morning without all the rising - put it in the fridge for the last rise. It can rise overnight and go into the oven in the morning. Your bread will still rise overnight, just lots slower. Recipe: Holiday Breakfast Wreath |

No magic - just keep up with the junk every day & purge most of the dust catchers from your house. I empty the dishwasher every morning while I wait for my coffee to brew so there's always a place for the dishes. Squeegee the shower before you get out; wipe down the bathroom surfaces with your damp towel ending with the floor. Clean up after dinner every night. Then all you have to do on the weekend is vacuum & dust & give the bathroom & kitchen a good wipe down with an all purpose cleaner, with a weekly "extra" like a couple of windows. 5 Tips to Make Your House Appear Cleaner Than It Is |

I agree- make the bed and get one thing done in every room. You've made a good start and won't feel as overwhelmed. However, the best way to keep the house from eating you alive is to declutter - get rid of everything you don't use/love. Don't bring a new something in unless an old something goes! And of course - clean as you go. Not glamorous, but it works. Get Going: What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do |
