I thought the before looked familiar - my mother has the exact same dresser (she bought it new) in mint condition. Before & After: Dresser Makeunder Curbly |

Don't make a change to the front of the house with out an architect. In the short run it may be better to look at the roof line as a feature rather than a drawback - it's very much a period look. Painting the fascia to match the siding will minimize the odd lines, and thoughtful landscaping will help. Should I Change the Roofline on My New House? Good Questions |

I do nearly all of the housework and yard work because although our financial contributions are about the same I have a lot more time at home to get it done, and I am the one with particular standards. I do have specific requests - squeegee the shower every time, put everything away in the bathroom before you leave in the morning, and if you are cooking something to take to work clean up after it - if I don't get to eat it I won't clean up after it. It works out OK but I do find myself getting pissy if there is no effort to pick up after herself I don't want to nag about things that should be obvious. Housework provides everyone in the house with a pleasing restorative environment and it should be more appreciated. Home Ec.: What is Your Housework Worth? |

I had a house guest for 2 years. Seriously. And after I divorced I never heard from him or his family ever again. When Is A Guest No Longer A Guest? |

For the commenter who wanted a way to have a braid for Christmas morning without all the rising - put it in the fridge for the last rise. It can rise overnight and go into the oven in the morning. Your bread will still rise overnight, just lots slower. Recipe: Holiday Breakfast Wreath |

No magic - just keep up with the junk every day & purge most of the dust catchers from your house. I empty the dishwasher every morning while I wait for my coffee to brew so there's always a place for the dishes. Squeegee the shower before you get out; wipe down the bathroom surfaces with your damp towel ending with the floor. Clean up after dinner every night. Then all you have to do on the weekend is vacuum & dust & give the bathroom & kitchen a good wipe down with an all purpose cleaner, with a weekly "extra" like a couple of windows. 5 Tips to Make Your House Appear Cleaner Than It Is |

I agree- make the bed and get one thing done in every room. You've made a good start and won't feel as overwhelmed. However, the best way to keep the house from eating you alive is to declutter - get rid of everything you don't use/love. Don't bring a new something in unless an old something goes! And of course - clean as you go. Not glamorous, but it works. Get Going: What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do |

I actually have a library at last. I just moved in a few weeks ago and I think I can say it meets my expectations. It's cozy, cluttered, and exactly the sort of room to retire to to knit and think. Room of Requirement: What's Your Dream "Special" Room? |

I got rid of the cramped and ugly tub/shower combo in my two bedroom cottage and used the space for a really nice shower. With only one bathroom I did not want the uncomfortable and unsightly compromise unit & I don't care if it hurts resale. Does Shower, No Tub, Hurt Resale Value? Good Questions |

I pack myself, with the exception of china and crystal. If I am moving across town I move all of the boxes I can lift myself (and I pack so there are very few I can't handle myself). I hire professional movers to move the furniture and any large items I can't lift safely. It's not a bad experience if you are VERY organized. Last time I moved across the country and had only one full trash can when we drove away ten minutes after the movers left. I think there are just too many ways to ruin friendships in a moving situation, and if you plan carefully you can minimize the expense. A Moving Story: Friends or Professionals? |

I moved across the country from this year. When I arrived I already had a knitting group through Meetup.com, I looked for blogs from the area to get an idea of what the residents were like, and "drove" around on Google Earth. If the local newspaper has an online version you can really get a lot of good information. I live on Cape Cod, and most of the local news is not reported off Cape. I've gone both ways - depends on the size of the room, the light, and the other furnishings. A nice rug is a significant purchase and you'll want to love it. Right now I have a very expensive and beautiful patterned wool rug in my attic because I do not have a room large enough for it, and another similar one on its way from a family member which will also end up in my attic for now. How about a neutral rug layered with a (much) smaller patterned rug? It's an interesting modern look and when/if either of you tire of the look the patterned rug could be replaced, removed, or recycled to a different spot in your home. The Case for Neutral Area Rugs |

At 32 I bought a beautiful bedroom set for a huge amount of money which was much too large to fit into the house I moved to after my marriage broke up. 20 years later my ex is still suing it. I'm pretty careful with my furniture dollar these days. How Old Were You? First Large Furniture Purchase? |
