@sarahbru - I'm in east Dallas...and yeah, if you have traditional, non-appropriate plantings, as most do in Dallas, especially north Dallas, they will not do well in this heat and drought. Native and adapted plants are the way to go. My yard is in full bloom! jen_g - Africanization is not as big a problem as the media would have you think. I'm in Texas. There are ways to control the agression of a hive by requeening. I've never had trouble with it nor anyone I know. Beekeeping Basics: Before You Get Started |

We just had someone come out to our beekeeping club to talk about integrated pest management in the garden and he said buying ladybugs is a waste of money because they will fly away--that they are usually taken from California and have an urge to return home. He said that if you have aphids, you will get your own local ladybugs eventually. Aphids show up first and then the predatory insects will follow, provided that you have an organic garden. I've always been told that if you're at a restuarant and your hot food comes first you can eat it. If it's room temperature food, you are to wait until everyone else receives theirs. I'm assuming the same would go for something cold like ice cream. The Essentials of Dinner Etiquette, Illustrated! Cup of Jo |

I'd be careful about using some of these...because they will kill some beneficial insects too. The bad insects emerge before the beneficial predatory insects. For aphids, use a strong spray of water. That actually kills the aphids because it rips their mouths off. Then the ladybugs and predatory wasps will appear and eat them up. How To Make Natural Garden Pesticides |

Yeah, I'd really recommend rough cut cedar or redwood if you're going to do wood--it will last a lot longer. Lowes sells rough cut cedar but they won't cut it to size (I have no idea why--they said it's too hard). I found a lumber yard that would though--if you're in Dallas, it's called Ivey Lumber. I love raw baby spinach in salads, smoothies, etc. But cook it and I want to puke. I can't handle the taste for some reason. Doesn't matter how it's cooked or what it's in/on. Pizza, curry, whatever...can't do it. Mark Bittman Says: Cook Your Spinach! |

I never use bananas, avocados, tofu, or yogurt in my green smoothies. I do add ground flax/chia seeds, but that's for the nutrition, not for the texture/flavor.
