Our neighbour has a heavy bag. He goes many rounds when he's in the mood. It's against our wall. I feel your pain. I would take it out completely. If you need some storage for coats, etc., I would get an armoire that can be placed against the wall (which would reduce or almost eliminate the obstruction). If you have room for your coats in your master bedroom closets (!), than I would just install a few hooks or a coat tree once you take out the closet, so that there is a spot for guests to hang their hats.
