I made this last night for dinner; it was really tasty and a bit of a kerfuffle. I wouldn't make it on a weeknight, but it's worth the trouble on a Sunday night. I forgot to pick up soba noodles, so I used some thin rice noodles I had on hand -- quite good. I might even make the miso-roasted asparagus on its own as a side sometime. Thanks for the recipe!

I've said it before here and I'll say it again: butcher block countertops look great, but they are tough to maintain and keep feeling clean (I am not a germophobe at all) and they can crack easily. We have the ones from IKEA, installed by the previous owner, and they're already splitting even though we care for them. I would recommend using them sparingly.

I was in a baking mood this weekend and found these when I was looking around the site. I was a little skeptical about mixing the butter into the flour, especially since I don't have a stand mixer, but these were quite good. I, too, substituted the lemon extract with juice and zest, and also cut back a bit on the confectioner's sugar. Yum.

I have butcher block in both the kitchen and the bathrooms (installed by the previous owner) and I have to say they never really feel clean, they do burn and they can also crack pretty easily. They look great, but they're just not practical; I'm saving my ducats so I can replace them. Meantime, I will try poly coating and see if that's a good solution.

Thanks! I have a bro who's a woodworker (in Columbus!), so I'll see what he thinks, too.

This is a beautiful reno and it's giving me great ideas for styling ours. We also have butcher block countertops in our bathroom (from the previous owner) and would like to seal them. What did you use?
