I don't get along with people who fall under the comment "Some people don't like to cook bacon at home because it can smell up the kitchen and indeed your whole house" - whenever I cook bacon (or even better, cook onions in leftover bacon grease!) I always comment that someone needs to come up with a perfume that smells like this. To me, there is NOO better smell than bacon cooking :-)

I hardly ever lug my cuisinart out, but can't imagine life w/o my KitchenAid. I just don't think the cuisinart is a big deal- I'm not sure why, I'm a passionate cook and cook frequently for my big family. I'm not much of a baker, so maybe bakers use the cuisinart more? However, my immersion blender is my best friend, us eit dail on smoothies, soups, frozen cocktails, etc. My zester(s) are always w'/in arms reach too. For grating cheese, I also have the kitchenaid attachment and it's amazing- that was a gift tho, I was fine grating by hand. I would agree about the mini-prep too - awesome for nuts, pesto, salsa, etc.

I have terra cotta kitchen floor and would NOT reccommend it all. My biggest issue with them is that when you stand on them for long periods of time, it kills your back. There is no natural give like wood floors have, so as a result I have a series of ugly, but back saving, chef mats through out the kitchen. I love to really cook and before I got the mats, I was in tears from the lower back pain, granted I seem to be suspectible to it for some reason, but it's a huge factor.

Is it possible to make granola with steel cut oats? The nutrition benefits of steel cut seem impressive, but not sure if it's possible to incorporate. Thank you!

Concur about stop & shop being HORRIFIC. I live in a busy area close to NYC and S&S is abysmal for produce, meat and prices in general. Shoprite is here and while not the prettiest store, their prices ROCK, the quality is AMAZING and broad array of all items, including Organic. only thing they aren't super strong is international hard to find things, but that doesn't stop the love I have for them.

While a good use of space no doubt, I feel like it would be awkward to figure out which knife is which - you'd have to bend over weirdly, since just guessing might end up in a slice across the finger.

you can always bring a chafing dish and throw a sterno under it to keep something warm - ie chicken/beef wellington or get one of those nifty insulated serving bowls/dishes that keep things cold (ie grain salad, green salad). Alternately, bring heavy apps - ie filet on mini toasts w/horseradish, chicken satay on sticks, etc. people will eat that first so it won't go bad.

NY times magazine posted an article 2 summers ago about Pinapple Daquiris that Mayr Ed Koch used to love - hands down it's the best summer drink. It calls for coco lopez - but be warned, we blew out a few blenders that first summer we made so many!

Can you fit the microwave in the cabinet above so it's hidden? I vote for counterspace too if it's that or the microwave- microwaves aren't good for you anyway. Despite my love of counterspace, I finally broke down and bought a large toaster oven on my countertop and can't live w/out it - it's a second oven (can fit a whole roasting chicken!) and doesn't warm up kitchen on hot summer days like the full oven and heats up most things the microwave does too, plus no harmful microwaves.

my three kids all had lice last week (GROSS) and I learned that things that can not be washed (ie helmets) can be put in the freezer to kill the buggers. as a crazy precaution, I also put all jackets, hats, etc in the freezer too after washing them in hot water and putting them in the highest heat dryer. it was a long exhausting week, but I was thankful for my large basement freezer.

Since i'm usually shopping with my kids with me, i have to bring a list that is organized by department, otherwise i'd leave with a wagon of pointless crap. between my meal planning obsession, limited time to shop and the distraction of having kids with me, I'm a lost cause w/o a list.
