If feminine and masculine are unacceptable as subjective descriptive terms then when exactly are they acceptable? Can one say, this girl is feminine while that one is masculine? If yes then we're almost certainly agreeing on some pretty basic style assumptions and if no then do the words have any meaning at all - or do we all have to reclassify them as mere gibberish syllables? I would say there probably isn't a designer - at least not in the common understanding of the term. To me these look like a mass market product that is an assemblage of stock parts from a couple furniture component suppliers with some very small, customized details. Absolutely beautiful. I had the same question about the base of the chair. I can see that there's a swivel but it seems to be more than that. It's odd the way the legs look well in front of the seat. A Mid-Century Home Preserved on Long Island |

I'm a bit underwhelmed by these "transformations." On the first room in particular, I know everyone will focus on the white paint over the wood paneling but most of the improvement is just in the fact that they removed the clutter. I won't say the original wood tone would have been better but there's a lot they could have done with it and now that it's painted no one can never go back (practically speaking, that is.) One of the really cool things about Wright is that with a career that spanned over 70 years you can find everything from Victorian to Prairie to Modern When you compare these Usonian homes to some of his early "bootleg" houses you wouldn't believe it possible they were designed by the same architect. Knock offs aren't only a problem when it comes to "iconic" designs. A typical strategy for Asian furniture manufacturers is to have their US sales reps 'scout' the floors of their biggest dealers, looking for good selling US made designs only to take those designs to their factories in China, Vietnam, Malaysia or wherever then go back to the dealer and threaten that they'll sell the popular design to his biggest competitor unless the dealer takes and runs the knock off. And the threat carries weight because the dealer knows how well the design sells and is desperate to prevent his competitor from having access to his best merchandise. Now in the furniture industry it's understood that something less than half the designs that are prototyped ever make it into manufacturers lines and of those that do, maybe something like one in five ever sells well. So after spending tens of thousands of dollars per design on product development less than one out of every ten has the potential to become a success. Now consider that a Chinese manufacturer with an artificially devalued currency is going to try bypass the expense of research and development, he's going to steal your best designs and intimidate your dealers into dropping your product for his. That is the reality of the knock off business. Next Tuesday! Knockoffs: Flattery or Theft?? Apartment Therapy Design Evening |

FYI at NeoCon HM showed a new option on the Eames lounge chair - a slightly bleached Ash veneer. It was shown in white leather and the Ash has a very milky blond tone. It's bit against the current grain as everything in recent years has been dark, dark, dark however I can tell you that from certain leading indicators only obvious to manufacturers (market prices in lighter woods, custom requests, market saturation, etc.) that we are at the very leading edge of a trend toward light blond wood tones. They were huge in the eighties and all fashion is cyclical so if you buy a white and ash lounger today you can expect to be a tad ahead of the curve for a year or two after which you'll look like a trendsetter and enjoy probably a decade or so of being spot on style wise. I'm going to go against the current here and suggest something completely different - a weathered finish. One gallon of water per one pound of baking soda, mix well and coat liberally. Several hours later you'll have a uniform look that speaks more 'antique' and less 'shabby'. Look at all the mileage Restoration Hardware is getting out of this trend. If the results aren't what you hoped then paint remains an option and frankly with the uniform palate, even staining becomes an option. Also I wouldn't sweat the old paint that remains in the open pores. It's emulating something like a reverse Ceruse finish with a black glaze instead of white. With gray weathered oak and black grain these could look great! Paint Or Stain Wood In 1917 Home? Good Questions |
