Not about searching, per se, but about sifting through your findings -- like you guys, I make my "dream list" at the beginning of the apartment search, but I also think long and hard about the non-negotiables. What CAN'T I live with? Or, to put it another way, what can't I live without? For me, for example, I refuse to live with rental carpet -- I don't have to have hardwood floors, but carpet is a deal breaker. Windows/light is another. (You get the point...)

I usually also make a list of the things that aren't completely non-negotiable, but are so close that the apartment has to be perfect in nearly every other way for it to be worth me going to see. Right now, for example, I live in Richmond, VA and having an outdoor space, be it patio, porch, balcony, or stoop, is on that level. Not quite a deal-breaker but certainly a priority. (This wouldn't work in some places - New York, as an obvious example.)

So basically, I think, I'm seconding the list-making and pushing it further as a way of prioritizing and deciding how best to use your time and energy. B/C I don't know about you guys, but I get sick of trekking all over town for hours and hours looking at dumps...

vintage slip. or sometimes nothing.

i've definitely been known to pad around the house wearing my fleecy blanket wrapped around me like a robe, though, especially when woken in the middle of the night.

I just got a card catalog for Christmas after YEARS of searching -- it's smallish and beatiful: about the width of a file cabinet, around 4 1/2 feet tall, and lovely oak. Sigh. LOVE.

Anyway, it's become my spice organizer. I have gone there. They are alphabetized. AND I LOVE IT!

Wooden alphabet blocks are some of my favorite all-purpose holiday decorations. I have a big bucket of very old ones that I picked up at a thrift store years ago, and I always use them to make holiday messages - or just to post words or sayings that I find funny or motivational.

My number 1 trick for making room appear cleaner (and BE cleaner too, I suppose) is to wipe down the "Hand Traffic" areas - door jambs, doorknobs, lightswitches, cabinet pulls/edges, etc. Somehow that under-the-radar grime makes everything look dingy -- and the 10 minutes it takes to clean it makes the whole room look shiny and new!

I'm with Phoxx on this - garlic powder is not a substitute for fresh garlic but an entirely different (and good) ingredient. To me, it has a completely different taste and is thus used for completely different things -- not just different kinds of dishes, but for different flavors and effects. Red beans 'n' rice, for example. There are times when I'm going for a rich, kicky flavor, and obviously only real garlic is going to work. But other times, I want a comfort food flavor - sort of mellowly sweet, salty, and spicy - and garlic powder does a much better job of providing that than real fresh garlic.

I'll also add that lately I've found myself using garlic powder in the place of table salt. Frequently, I think, I reach for salt because I feel that something needs a little more flavor -- NOT because it actually needs salt -- and garlic powder (and certain other seasonings) are way better at doing that and way better for you.

You know, I've never like Norman Rockwell's paintings very much, but I actually really enjoyed the photographs. I'd be happier seeing those than the, to me, tired old paintings!

Okay, let me first offer a disclaimer: This is not a real solution. At all. Just a quick, pretty temporary fix. Instead of painting the cabinets (at least the top ones), I'd suggest removing the doors and papering the insides, using a fairly temporary glue. I've done this in rental apartments several times, in situations where I can't paint and want a splash of color, and it's cheap, easy, and can make a space livable while you save up/decide what you want in the long term.

I would also second the suggestion to replace the light with some kind of pendant or chandelier. That will make a huge difference in the character of the room and would probably be the biggest investment, if it were me. Since you sound like money's an issue (which I totally understand!), I'm guessing that putting in hardwood floors isn't really an option. As another quick fix, you might invest in a nice, bright rug to bring some color and whimsy into the space pretty easily.

Actually, while i doubt that i would do the baking part with freshly-made pasta, this is an AWESOME idea of using up leftover pasta. I often make more pasta than I want for that night's dinner, and this seems like a quick and convenient way of re-creating the leftovers into a new and tasty dish. Especially since it could be baked in the toaster oven... I'll probably make this tonight, actually. I've got some leftover penne and a tupperware of tomato sauce in the fridge right now!

Hmm. I agree with the dorm-room criticism, I think. I think I'd like it better if they were a uniform color, essentially just preserving the geometry and repetition of the cds. I wonder, can you spray-paint cds?

Does it matter whether canned pumpkin is "pumpkin" or another type of squash?

Not to me. As long as it isn't chockfull of food colorings, flavor boosters, and preservatives, I'm not too fussed. But, then again, I'm not a terribly fussy gal -- and I'm really only willing to roast a pumpkin once every year or two.

Two things I've found:

One: Avoid overcooking it. Though you want to simmer it long enough to extract all the sweet, sweet flavors, cook it too long and it ends up bitter. Which is gross.

Two: Always taste the stock before using it. Every so often, a stock will end up tasting bitter (see above) or just particularly strong. This flavor will transfer over into your soup/etc, so make sure you want that flavor before using. That said, I frequently freeze my extra stock and stick a masking tape note to the top of the container that lists the date made and the predominant flavors. That way I can pick and choose according to my intended dish.

Also, I've found that rosemary makes my stock quite bitter, though I have friends who swear by its flavor. Any thoughts?

Remember the futuristic society that Bill and Ted were supposed to create (by way of their excellent adventures, of course!)? I'd like those guys to visit (particularly if George Carlin were still around in this hypothetical reality) and we'd listen to Ziggy Stardust. Then we'd jam. Badly.

Incidentally, I made a pretty entertaining playlist a few days ago entitled "Sci-Fi Meets Hi-Fi." Now I might have to revise it to include some of these songs!

Growing up in the South, my dad (and thus the rest of us) tried every possible trick to keep the deer out of the garden. Tin foil (as well as pie pans, etc) works no better - though no worse - than any of the others. Unfortunate, but true!
