when catalogs usually arrive at home, i have to remind my husband to look PAST the styling. but with ikea, we do the reverse. what ideas can we steal from their layouts? and it's so fun to shop there. it's like thrift-store shopping, you just have to know what to avoid.

This is thought provoking to this native Angeleno. More specifically, I hail from one of Los Angeles' many MANY less-than-chic but very diverse small towns. Weeks can go by before I need to leave my small town. Yet I live in the area that wrote the book on urban sprawl.

I think I might miss diversity if I lived in one of the US' smaller, more isolated towns. Far off towns with starlit skies and cows grazing in pastures. It sounds lovely, but I wonder about things like noodle houses, or where you'd go to have Indian food or beauty treatments, Korean spas, mariachi bands for hire. Can you order THAT on Amazon?

I like MCM furniture and design, but my home is a post-WWII tract home in Southern California, so it is not entirely out of place.

My pet peeve is other post-WWII tract homes with ornate Tuscan kitchens, or French country living rooms, or travertine smothered bathrooms. It just doesn't go with squatty little stuccoed homes near the beach!

15 and I rushed through it because I have an old (NOT FLAT SCREEN!) monitor and my eyes were dying.

40 yo female. My dad is color blind, as are both my sons. One son has it worse, though. They struggle with blends of red (orange, violet, brown, maroon, pink, lavender etc.).

Ow, my eyes.

Pretty, chic, and mildly spooky. The coral is lovely.

What is SO appealing to me about subway tile is that sterile, surgical look. And it's perfectly complemented by white grout. Clean!

Gen X here, almost 40. I started a balcony garden on Earth Day in my early 20s. But I am a 3rd generation Californian, and I come from a long line of gardeners. My Italian relatives grow food to eat and put up, and my Anglo relatives grow both food and ornamental plants. I grew up with parents who also grew--ahem--recreational drugs in the backyard.

My young children love to spend time in our garden and yard, though raising them and working 2 jobs makes it difficult to keep the garden the way I like it. I love nurseries, but PRICEY! I think the garden industry just wants us to spend more money. Pfft. I make my own compost and recycle gray water into irrigation for the yard. I'm a cheap gardener.

I played the Marconi Union song and it put me on edge.

My children listen to their docked ipod at bedtime. In addition to the Jewel album of lullabies, they listen to a classical compilation called Peaceful Baby, and Joshua Radin's We Were Here. He practically whispers the entire album.

I can't wait to see how the bathroom transforms. Our (new to us) 1950s house had previous owners that updated the kitchen and bath in the late 70s/early 80s. BLEAH. I really don't like brown or beige. Memories of my Catholic school uniform. Shudder.

Even my dentist's office has done away with phone call reminders and leaving voice mails. Everything is text or email. VMs can be inaudible, a pain to access, and they just get on my nerves. Send me a text.

Wow, if you guys like coconut oil, then you'd like jojoba oil too. Many of the same benefits (I don't ingest it, though) and it doesn't leave grease behind. Removes eye makeup, conditions hair & skin, safe for children and pets.
