I loooved Peg Bracken's I Hate to Cookbook, especially the parts where she suggests getting those fabulous brownies from the corner bakery instead of making them yourself. Well, that and the martinis.

Hmmm, that waterfall console? Reminds me of an old refrigerator I had with "rounded" top edges, off of which slipped a full bottle of Grande Marnier. A terrible loss that was also a terrible mess to clean up.

Had a potato explode just the other day as I was taking it out of the oven (I had on an oven mitt, thank goodness). I salvaged most of the potato, but had to clean the oven. Ugh.

Just coming off a bad bug but made it through with Heidi Swanson's Baby Lima Soup with Chipotle Broth. I used some cooked flageolet beans that were on hold in my refrigerator so this was quick, easy, and spirited. I've also used canned and frozen beans. The chipotle broth is the key.

One day after work feeling snffly, I picked up Moonstruck. Good think I loved it because I ended up with the worst case of flu in my life. Thankfully I was strong enough to work the remote control. Must have watched that movie 10 times. I still love it.

After a crazy commute home from work in the evening (two trains and a bus), cooking alone is my meditation. The simple act of putting on an apron and pouring a glass of wine is transformative.

Halibut simmered in a putanesca sauce is delicious. Use what's in your pantry -- chopped tomatoes, capers, black olives plus some chopped garlic and fresh parsley.

How about a pitcher of Pimm's Cup? Very British Colonial era, but also very refreshing with a spear of cucumber and a plate of spicy food.
