I like Annabelvita's and Therese Z's "stepped" book shelf idea.

Or, if you had the time and inclination, build rectangular boxes with translucent plastic tops. Light them from within with LEDs/christmas lights (you get the idea) and run all the power cords down a notch you cut into the back of the existing shelves.

The boxes would take up the back space of the deep shelves, pushing your books closer to the front edge and creating a lighted display space above and behind the books. The lighted boxes don't have to be as tall as the books.

I used to work in the hospitality industry and spent more nights than I can count staying overnight at the different properties I worked at or for work-related trips. I did this so often, I stopped looking out windows.

My conclusion: Paying more than you have to for a clean, quiet and secure place to sleep, sh*t and shower is a waste of money. You didn't spend time and money flying to that place to sit and look out of a hotel window.

Duct tape IS extremely useful, fun and a DIY must have. But 'Design on a Dime'? Not when covering an entire floor. DIY does not always equal inexpensive.

And that sectional rocks.

I've been using FastStone Photo Resizer and FastStone Image Viewer (which contains the Photo Resizer app) for years. They are small, easy to use and very powerful. Donations are encouraged.

Google "FastStone" and it should come up quickly.

1. Embrace the noise as part of city living.

2. Be louder (in a good way). Play music but keep it at a level that is respectful to your neighbors--in content and in volume. If you can, position the speakers in between your party and the street noises. That way, the music blends WITH the street sounds.

3. If possible, build a tall and solid folding screen. Break it out for parties and use it to screen off the source of the noise. Since it's temporary, it can be taller than a permanent fence. Some assembly/disassembly might be necessary.

Well, while the examples lack the real issues related to doors, windows and other fixed architectural challenges to designing within an existing space, the exercise of trying out different arrangements is still valid.

There are online apps for this as well as cheap $5 or $10 software discs at your local office store that can do the trick. Even some graph paper and scaled paper cut-outs will do the trick.

I used Google Sketchup for my small place. A little more work, but I was able to capture every detail very clearly. Just make pretty much everything an 'object' (including keeping the walls as seperate 'objects').

The 'toothpaste is out of the tube' on this one. Those who care about only buying and displaying vintage originals--and can afford it, wil do so. Those who aren't as particular will purchase the replicas.
I feel particularly sorry for those who will only settle for the real thing but can never afford it.

For me, a replica is just fine. And when you look at soemthing like 'La Chaise' by Eames, which was designed for the 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design and is now nearly 10K for a replica at Hive, the irony is tangible. Was it ever sold at 'low-cost'? Doubt it.
