This article doesn't make a lot of sense. Buying in bulk meaning in large quantities is not at all the same thing as buying exactly as much as you need from the bulk bins and the advice shouldn't be lumped together.
For example, I buy flour, nuts, cereals, yeast, spices, oils, and a whole lot of other things from the bulk bin even though they get stale or rancid quickly because I buy the amount I will use in a relatively short period of time. I pay less per pound than the packaged version of almost all of them and I only get the amount I need. Also, in stores that sell a large volume of bulk bin, those foods are often even fresher than the packaged version because of the high turnover.
On the other hand, I buy almost no food items in large, discount pack quantities with a few exceptions of canned items that essentially have no expiration date or things I am positive I can make specific use of in a set amount of time.

And yes, flour and nuts both store very well in the freezer.

I once brined a small turkey in a large stock pot and the high salt content did cause some minor pitting.

I have a male Persian that same color. I think you did this whole house tour just to have an excuse to humiliate Messi on the WWW in his lion cut. ;-)

I also have some click-clacks that have been working well for years. They are very durable and airtight but the seals are not functional at freezer temperatures. I recently bought one of the oxo square ones and I like it better. The oxo is a more convenient shape, seals very tightly, and washes well. Assuming it proves durable, the oxo definitely wins.

I hate my tile counters. I know everyone has already mentioned the cleaning problem. Even the two people defending it sound like their methods for keeping it clean are a pain in the butt compared to any solid surface.

What hasn't been mentioned is the inconvenience of tile for actual cooking. Every time I make bread or roll out a large pie crust I am resentful of those darned grout lines that make it impossible to have a good surface to work on. Even the cheapest veneer style counters can be scrubbed and sprinkled with flour.

KittTheDog - I was just going to say the same thing. When you are feeding a newborn, especially breastfeeding, it seems as though feeding time literally takes up a majority of your life both day and night. Having food ready to go that you can eat while feeding a baby is really helpful.
My group of friends has a tradition of bringing over a dinner for the whole family but also what we call breastfeeding foods. Easy to eat with one hand (preferably no utensil), non-messy, good refrigerated or at room temperature so they can sit around or be grabbed quickly out of the fridge. This can include pita, crackers, prepped fruits and veggies, nuts, hummus, cheese cubes or slices, nuts, cold salads, etc. Sometimes we will make these into boxed or tray meals so the mom doesn't even have to think about picking up more than one thing. One of the things I get lots of compliments on is a brown rice salad with chicken, peanuts, veggies, and a lime dressing. It does require a spoon but if you drop a little on the floor or the baby's head it isn't a big mess. It is very nutritious but also light. Also, it is good warm or cold so you can just scoop some into a bowl anytime.

@rebeccatt - I wondered that myself once so asked some flour experts and the answer is "no". The big difference between pastry and regular or bread flours is not the fineness of the grind but the protein content of the wheat. You want to stick with higher protein (gluten) content for almost all types of bread.

Sometimes I just eat it with milk (1% is what we usually have in the house) but occasionally I like to dress it up with a drizzle of honey and handful of raisins and roasted almonds. I prefer the Barbara's Shredded Wheat to the original Nabisco.

I am another non-of-the-above person. My mother would lay a piece of toast on a plate and quickly slice a whole (unpeeled) egg in half above it so the yolk would run onto the toast. This sounds like it would be messy but it works very well. Then she would use a spoon to neatly scoop the rest out of the shell halves onto the toast and sort of mash/spread it around. Some salt and pepper and you have an open faced egg sandwich.

Dansko really are not perfect for everyone. I wore them for years and loved them and then slowly started developing significant problems with my feet and knees. After trying everything else I decided to change shoes and sure enough, it was the clogs.

I kinda like it. I also don't understand the haters. "Not your thing"? Fine. "Hard to keep clean"? I get that too. But how does this look any more like a cage than any other crib?

I agree that a fullsize dishwasher is totally silly. One person can't dirty enough dishes to fill it before it had to be run and it takes soo much space.

But the oven complaint doesn't need to be an issue either. In a space that small the best option would be to have a a combination microwave/convection oven.

I know a lot of people have already said this but I have to add my vote for the "rinse and hang up" method. I never have trouble with mold the mat just dries. Mine just hangs upside down (suction cups up) over the side of the tub and dries completely that way. No mold, no fuss, and no extra devices or work required.

To not be seduced by the allure of "new" recipes and stick with the stuff that I do well and know works. That think I have been doing for years is really good and people like it!

I love Alton Brown's recipe for gravy. It uses roast turkey wing stock and the fat from the stock goes into a "schmaltz manie" as a thickener. The flavor is fantastic and you can make LOTS of it but it takes days to make. So this year I remembered to order turkey wings early. I will have all my gravy components made and frozen by the end of the week.

KHinNJ: If you think that it is safe to leave a highly mobile 18 month alone anywhere for more than a few seconds you either aren't a parent or have very unusual children. FreeRangeKids isn't advocating that either, by the way.

Your hundreds of thousands of years comment is irrelevant too. During most of that time people lived in extremely small domiciles and their children were probably never out of their sight for the first several years of life.

I agree that this problem is very easy to solve but your comment is judgmental, inappropriate, and poorly though out.

Supersojen: I have a normal 5.5' bathtub(not shower stall). And yes, my daughter comes in the shower with me because the bathroom is not as clean as I would like. Now that she is a very tall two year old her legs are finally getting long enough that they are affecting my shower space.
