On the indication of your style indicated by those chairs (which I love) I guess you'd go for something modern/simple. A couple of ideas:

I also think you should consider when you're going to be using that table. Is it going to be used for breakfast/sunday afternoon reading the papers? or mostly dinner? If dinner, I'd almost be inclined to fill it in, embrace the lack of light, and make it a bit more intimate. One of my favorite places to eat is a place called Den Gyldene Freden in Stockholm - there are tables in the cellars which are just so cozy. Quick question: why on earth would anyone be offended to see their flag used in this way...?

As far as I can see, there's no animosity behind the thing whatsoever. The point with flag burning is that it's used as a symbolic and aggressive gesture. The burning of the flag itself doesn't actually matter... no one would care if it were accidental (or at least I hope they wouldn't). It's like someone giving you the finger - it'd be meaningless if it weren't for the message behind it. With this, the message is 'the Union Jack is cool and I want it in my home.' Even better that it's in association with Man's Best Friend.
