So inspired by this. I am in the process of downsizing myself and this gave me hope that I don't need as much space as I thought I did. Bravo.

right on @galeana! there are so many reasons people live where they live. Financial, job-related, personal preference, or whatever––it's nobody's business but yours.

Really lovely room and great color palette. The subtle way the rug picks up the color and theme of the pillow in the background is great. The sofa really fits the scale of the room.

I adore this house! What a wonderful place to grow up. Lucky family. Unfussy and practical but also gorgeous and curated. They achieved that balance perfectly.

That is such a cute story. I completely understand waiting to ask a significant other about an item that perhaps isn't one's taste. As someone with definite opinions about the stuff I choose to live with, sometimes I need to be careful that I don't over-express myself about my boyfriend's things (even though we don't live together.)

This is a perfect nursery. I love everything, especially the color palette. I also need to save this post and show it to people who are so terrified of knotty pine paneling. Painting it actually makes for more texturally interesting walls.

I really appreciate constructive or positive comments but at some point I'm kind of regretting my decision to have my place on here. This space works really well for me, my renovation abilities, and my budget. I'm an avid cook with dishes that could accommodate a dinner party for 12, with a huge pantry stocked with food. I increased counter space, maximized the practicality of my under-cabinet storage with more drawers and a lazy Susan, and donated or reused existing cabinets and appliances. I am not naive or youthful, and this is not the first kitchen I've designed. I realize you put yourself out there by being on these types of blogs, but honestly, back off with the snide remarks.

@Vivacites: Best of luck completing your renovation! The floor color is Benjamin Moore's Amherst Gray, HC-167. I used three coats of the porch & floor paint.

Hi Laura, This is not a dumb question at all! I searched for a chimney style hood that did not require outside venting and there are only a few options out there. This is from the Broan Elite line, and has an optional ventless recirculating kit that uses a charcoal filter. I think it added about 75.00 to the total cost, but it was worth it. I didn't want to run a duct across the room to vent it to the outside, or bust through the brick exterior to do so.

Sometimes it is nice within a space to have pieces from the same period in the same wood tone, for example a teak Danish modern cocktail table in the living room and a similar style teak dining table in the adjoining dining area. Doesn't mean that this is an absolute rule, but it does create some degree of visual harmony. In other words, some repetition in style and wood tone/species can be great, but too much looks boring. It's also important to balance wood with other materials. Style and weight of your molding and trim, floor material, cabinetry are all factors that should be considered when choosing furniture and the materials they are made from.

Old church buildings are usually for sale or abandoned prior to being reused as homes. So no public buildings are being taken away from anyone, rather they are often being rescued from being torn down. And "upcycling" isn't even a real word... that doesn't seem to stop people from overusing it.

@Pi right on! You expressed my thoughts better than I could. I don't think this post has anything to do with wealth per se, but rather self-sufficiency, and dare I say it... maturity. A coworker of mine has a charming home that is always clean and welcoming. I know her income is not great, but she wears & uses quality vintage & second hand and practices excellent home economy. For me, it's about having clean towels ready for guests, and a stocked pantry during the blizzard. And having the name of a great upholsterer makes me LESS consumerist. Rather than buying cheap sofas from IKEA every few years, I would rather invest in refurbishing the sturdy one I found at an estate sale for $65. It's also about taking care of your things and respecting what you have.

I love Timelines Antiques & Danish Teak Classics! Definitely a stop for me whenever I make it back to the Twin Cities. You have done a great job with this place. Gorgeous & subtle colors & great scale in all of your furniture pieces really helps make the rooms feel light and spacious.

@Dominic: You're welcome and we are so glad to know there are other Berwyn bungalow dwellers reading Apt Therapy! Many of our friends think we are nuts too. As for the landscaping, that is sort of a sad state of affairs right now. :( It is definitely on our list for 2012!

@HeraHere: Please do shop from us! Some of what you see may eventually end up at one of the local markets we attend, including the Vintage Bazaar and Dose Market. The collection is constantly rotating.

@fiona: hahaha... we hate the orange-toned wood doors too! When we moved in, everything was that color: crown, baseboard, floors, windows. Original to the 1942 house but not very pretty. We are debating whether to do the doors in black stain or white like the rest of the woodwork. They are flat with no panel/relief so we are worried seeing no wood grain (by painting) might look dull. Thoughts?

Thanks for all the nice comments! To answer a few questions:
House Voyeur-the orange cabinet is in its original condition and (thankfully) was never painted.
Cara- the triptych painting is by a Chicago artist, Jonathan Franklin www.jfranklinart.com
Sam I Am- we keep bills, checkbooks, greeting cards, vet records, birth certificates, and paint swatches in the dental cabinet!
Mimi2856- the wall color in the LR, DR, & halls is Benjamin Moore, Iced Cube Silver 2121-50
citygirlsf- the sconce is vintage, probably from about 1910, and most likely from a hotel...it's also intentionally hanging upside down. We liked it better this way!
Mr. Modtomic- the dining room chairs are Italian Leather campaign chairs. Not cheap, but not too comfortable either! :) They may not be our "forever" chairs, but are okay for now.
