It took a while for my 5 year and 2 year to show interest in their doll house. Honestly, the prefer the noisy electronic toys.

We hired a cleaning lady when I had my second baby. It was a waste of money for us, and we stopped asking her to come after the 3rd time. My mom and DH both helped with the baby and the chores. I had time to clean and cook during the "honeymoon". DH did the laundry after the kids were asleep.
I agree with CityParkMom. We should have saved the money for the occasional babysitter now that our kids are older.

We washed our cloth diapers our apt building's washers. Keep in mind that you'll end up doing loads and loads of newborn clothes in the first few months anyway. We washed them with hot water and a free and clear detergent. Put a bit of vinegar in the fabric softener compartment.

Check Craigslist. We bought a second hand Air Happy for half the price. It's about 5 years old now and still looks brand new.

We received the Philips Avent as a baby shower gift. It's expensive for what it is. We would not have purchased it. With that said, I love it. It's well designed. The parental unit is slim and has a rechargable internal battery. The baby unit plugs into an outlet and accepts batteries.

It is sound activated. We had a baby monitor for my older child that picked up the humidifer and the A/C. It drove us crazy to hear that hum all evening long. I think it could be a little more sensitive, though. It doesn't pick up on the baby's coos, only his cries.

We haven't had any interference with our neighbors' monitors or cordless phones.

She will grow into the covers very quickly. My oldest was only 5lbs 9oz at birth. We had one preemie size diaper custom made by a SAHM. (It was a luxury for us!) But he quickly grew into the XS Fuzzi Bunz as exxon23 suggested. We also used the smallest size Chinese prefolds with the velcro Bummies covers.

We bought a second hand Arm's Reach cosleeper and resold it after our baby outgrew just 6 months later. We loved the cosleeper, but I don't see the Deskette as being a piece of furniture I would want to keep for years. What do I do with it between the time our baby outgrows it as bed and begins to use it as a desk? (The desk seems too high for the little girl in the photo. So it will be the right height for, say, a 3 year old.)
