My son is allergic to dairy, so I feel your pain! We used to use Willow Run margarine as a butter substitute, but it was discontinued. Earth Balance just doesn't compare, taste and texture wise, but it works ok.

When I'm at my most organized (ha), I plan meals around the idea of commonality - like, if I want to make something with cilantro, I add another meal that also uses cilantro so that I can use up the bunch. One might be Thai and the other Mexican, so that it doesn't get boring.

I also organize my list according to the layout of the store, so I don't overlook anything and have to go back. And like the poster above - don't shop hungry! Or in my case, thirsty. I always know I should have had something before I left for the store because I come back with a cartful of impulse juice purchases.

Beautiful, Lynn! It definitely captures the simplicity and charm of village homes.
I'm in Fairport, too. :)

Mike, you can make a paste of baking soda and water and I'm sure that'll help. I use this on my glass-top stove to remove scorched spots and it works great there, too.

I love using edible nasturtium flowers on cakes/cupcakes - you can even 'sugar' them to add another level of delicate appeal. I can usually find them in the packaged herb area of my grocery's produce section.

Beautiful job! And FYI, I just saw two identical (not refinished) chairs on Rochester, NY's Craigslist right now if someone nearby feels like recreating the look! :)

I was giften some home-brewed Gose over the holidays but haven't had a chance to crack it open yet. We're huge on salted caramel, so maybe it won't be so odd?

My biggest pet peeve is storage-related. We have too many appliances and gadgets!

We're lucky enough to have a well-appointed kitchen, but there is just NO room for the fun kitchen gifts we've received over the years. Two crockpots, a panini maker, a bread machine, blender, Cuisinart, pasta roller, waffle maker, French press....where do they all go?! At this point we have more gadgets than food in the small pantry!

Margi - glass stovetops: make a thick paste of baking soda and water and scrub with a sponge or paper towel. Rinse and wipe clean. It's kept ours looking nearly new for years!

Alex.piros, we keep our spices in a large basket above the fridge. They don't take up cluttered visual space up there (all you see is the basket).

And the appliances? I HEAR YOU. Actually, we just received three more for Christmas and I have no earthly clue where they'll be stored!

My East Village apartment (and this was 1999) was smaller, very old, smelled of heating oil wafting up from the basement, with brick wall views out every window, for $1k. This looks like a bargain in comparison, especially since it's modern, clean, and new.

Right before closing on our current house the previous owners decided to use the self-clean feature on the oven - which locked it completely for days, until they paid to have it repaired. You can imagine I've never taken advantage of self-clean since.

I think it's hilarious that you chose Sufjan's Chicago - my kids and I just had a kitchen dance party the other night when that came on! They asked me to play it over and over.

Our Wegmans has a similar packaged fresh herb selection, but twice as expensive, unfortunately. Another decent option is a tube of fresh, pureed herbs that sells for about $4.99 - they last for a lot longer, however, good for winter. It's not ideal, but a good way to add a bright note of fresh cilantro or basil to a sauce off-season.

I agree - parchment paper is key. I've learned that the only way cakes/brownies/etc come out of a pan clean every time is to 1) grease/butter the pan, 2) lightly flour over the butter and tap out extra, and 3) cut a square of parchment to fit the bottom of pan. A bit of a PITA, but worth it!

I think having a well-designed shower curtain and a simple rail would be a lot more attractive than a drip-drying toilet cover hanging on the wall, personally. I've seen the showerhead/drain overseas quite a bit, and if there's any barrier at all, it's usually a curtain and rail.
Then again, it's your bathroom! I'm sure it would work for all intents and purposes, and if you like the toilet cover idea better, then go for it!

We've had a membership here for years now, and there's so much to do (and new exhibits popping up) that we're never bored. The Rochester area is a really great place to raise a family in general (to give you an idea, I moved back here from NYC to raise mine), and The Strong is a crown jewel.

I'm with the other commenters who use the salad forks and small spoons frequently. They're scaled just right for my kids to use as primary cutlery, and I use them for other things, too - salad forks are perfect little whisks for eggs. Teaspoons still dole out a neat spoon of sugar for coffee. And call me old-fashioned, but I still like setting a table for a party with all the silverware - casual as it may be in style - because it just looks more 'complete'.
