I am an interior designer and do a fair amount of sewing making things for my home, and my own clothes on occasion.

I have an old singer 833, that is about 30 years old. I like the older machines because they have metal parts which won't ware down like the plastic pieces they use in the new machines. The features are simple and easy to use, and it won't jam up as easily.

If you ever wonder what's in a name, Vera Wang recently put out a line of clothes for professional women with a signature color called Monster. It sold like crazy.

A few years earlier Vera had used the exact same color in a different line, and it was a complete flop. The only difference was the name of the color. She had originally called it lilac.

Another alternative to both confetti and fireworks are flying paper lanterns. They are very serene and beautiful.

This is a wonderful idea. Make sure the belts you use are in good condition, though.

If they are too dried out they will snap and fall apart the second someone sits on them. I bought a beautiful old leather belt from a thrift shop and it didn't last a day before the leather had snapped because it had been left to rot for too long.

As an interior designer, this could be a fantastic solution for clients who are renting a place and want to paint.

I would have to know how well this paper will stay up, though. If it starts peeling off on it's own, then it would be more trouble than it was worth.

Painting is going to be your best option. Staining wood that has been through so much already is going to get you some pretty spotty results.

A blog that I frequent for ideas is http://www.younghouselove.com/. This couple has renovated two old homes and document everything they do with beautiful results. I especially love seeing what they do with dark paneled rooms.

I highly recommend checking it out.

As an actual interior designer, I can tell you that I despise these kinds of shows. They give people the wrong idea about what it is like to work with a real designer, who is there to work for you, and make a space that is about you, not the designer's own personal taste.
These shows are a black eye in the face of real interior design.

A great alternative to buying new high efficiency windows and tossing out the old is just installing solar screens on the windows.

The screen doesn't look any different from a regular bug screen, except it blocks up to 90% of the sun's uv from hitting your windows, so that heat doesn't get transfered into your home. They are very cheap, you can install them yourself, and they also add wonderful privacy so you don't have to keep your curtains closed all the time.
