In Texas, a string of restaurants, Gloria's, recycles old doors for the bathroom stall "walls". It looks so cool! Better than those old metal walls and doors.

I have two small kids, a dog, and an artist (very messy) husband. In my family room that opens to the backyard I bought a great indoor/outdoor rug from Target. It is reasonable soft and doesn't look like an outdoor rug. Dirt from outside never sticks to it and the inevitable spills never stain. Lots of end of season sales for outdoor rugs right now.

I've had both dark and light floors in different houses. Dark is much harder to keep clean. If you go dark, choose a stain just a little darker than you want--the sun will fade stain over time. Also, make sure to ask for a water based sealant. It has a nicer finish, doesn't smell and dries much faster.

As the mother of a eight year old son with poor aim, I love these! But, be warned! I used them on my white hex tile with grey grout and it bleached the grout a whitish grey.

This sounds crazy, but it works! Take the "meat" part of a pecan nut, break it in half and rub it into the scratch. The oil from the pecan will darken the scratch and the meat fills it in. It is safe, cheap, and organic.

I wouldn't paint the floors or change the railing--just add more white furniture and accessories. A large flokati rug under the couch might satisfy your white fix. Show off that fabulous sectional-- turn it around with both sides against the wall to open up the living area.
