pantone is THE universal color standard for graphic designers. with a lot of my clients being "virtual" these days, we always refer to pantone to make sure everyone is on the same page color-wise before going to print. a red on a designer's monitor may look totally different on a client's monitor. red 179 c is very different from red 200 c. with pantone you have control and there are (hopefully) no surprises.
