Thanks for the heads up about this woman's art. I've just spent a half hour cruising through the archives on her blog and all I can say is WOW!

As for all the negative comments, I bet they were written by the same people who shop only at chain "design" stores and natter on about adding "pops of colour" to their interior spaces. Heh. I bet if these stones were used as pops of colour in a Pottery Barn ad, they'd be all over them.

Fantastic. Just fantastic.

(And to all the western Canadians out there, apologies for the Vanderzalm moment...)

I've made many road trips with my dogs (one trip took 25 days, crossed 24 states, and included five dogs). The best advice I can offer anyone travelling with a dog is this:

Every day, once you've checked into your motel/hotel, take the dog(s) for a 30 minute walk. Time it, if you have to. It's a great stress reliever for both dogs and humans. If it's too dark to feel comfortable walking alone in a strange place, find a Walmart. You don't have to shop there; just walk the perimeter of their well-lit parking lot a couple of times.

On all the trips taken with the dogs, we only missed our walk on one day. That was the time the dogs practised their hurdle racing in the motel room (using the beds as hurdles, of course).

Ldevere...given your experience, I'd suggest you try a whippet breeder, not rescue. Whippets are the perfect apartment dog. It's true that they have no car sense so off-lead adventures can be limited in opportunity but they're not impossible.

We got our first whippet while living in a condo in a downtown area. You really have to be diligent about walking them when you're in an apartment; otherwise, they'll be "self-exercising" inside.

I use similar recycled vases to add colour to my monochromatic bedroom by spray painting the bottles after cleaning.

I have to drink one or two G&T's before I can complete my set but, once that task is out of the way, they'll be filled with origami flowers.

Joss, Target sells retractable clotheslines. I don't know if they have ones that can be mounted in the shower but there must be some place out there that sells them.

I line dry my clothes in the summer (which in Sacramento equates to about six months). I love the smell of the clothing.

Two great line drying websites:

* the BBC website has tips on maximising the efficacy of your line drying habit; http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A592625

* artist Gretchen Markle has a number of oil paintings on the theme of "Cumberland Clotheslines"; http://gretchenmarkle.com/gallery/cumberland_clotheslines_1/

My sisters and I camped out in the backyard on many summer nights however we used to build our "tent", using 2 x 2s to frame our structure and old blankets as "walls". We generally ended up with 2 or 3 rooms in our tent.

Of course, that one night that the "wall" sagged into a candle and lit the whole thing on fire put an end to that fun!

I'm pretty sure the attractant works on smell, not sight, so any coloured bottle should do the trick.

If you really don't care about the sight of little corpses, you can also try out these funnels from Lehmans:

Ten bucks for six of them...

I have covered the top of a dresser with burlap. It looks a fair bit like grass cloth.

All those complaints about the division of Canada must come from T.O.

I'm a bad British Columbian and, finally, someone sees Canada the same way I do...British Columbia (heaven!) and then the rest of the country.

Everything old is new again, Princess Fi. At least, that's what my dogs think...just yesterday I finished a "fake chenille" pillowcase cum doggy bed:

I doubt I'd put chenille on my bed but I definitely plan on making more dog beds out of it!

Thanks, Laure...

We had Boots growing up in Canada too (at least where I grew up). I'll have to check out the Target offerings (as soon as my local Target finishes its renovations and gets back to being fully stocked!).

I can't see the picture well enough but is that Boots product as in the drugstore Boots? At Target?

There are these crate covers:

That aside, I think your idea of painting a metal crate and then weaving something through the slots is inspired. You could use strips of wallpaper, strips of grasscloth, fabric, ribbon...just about anything.

It's German.

Love the product but, oh my god, the price! €1275 with no back panel or €1635 for one with a fixed back panel. I shudder to do the exchange calculations...

I've been coveting those planters since seeing them in Berkeley this past January. However, any living thing I buy for that price better have fur and an impressive pedigree. I plan on modifying these directions from Martha to make my own succulent planter on the cheap:

How "earth-friendly" are the plug in scent diffusers?

Sigh. I was hoping for a non-electric diffusion system.
