I could not have open shelving in my kitchen. We cook A LOT and fry and/or stir fry about once a week, so there are always bits of this or that in the air. As it is, the cabinets above and around my stove get covered in cooking gunk and I have to wipe them down periodically. Plus I have four cats and there seems to be always hair floating around.

However, I do appreciate the look of open shelving!

I've been following Kimberly's blog for years. As she said in a comment above, the "before" picture was actually an "after" because they gutted their whole kitchen a few years ago. Like most people, she continues to tweak as her style changes or as funds allow. If you don't do that, your space becomes stale.

I have been hesitant for people outside of my own blog readers to see my home because I don't feel like it's finished. We are usually our own worst critics. This AT post is just showing how a few minor changes can make a difference in a space.

If we all did the exact same thing in our spaces, how boring would that be? While all the elements Kimberly uses in her home would not necessarily make their way to mine, that's okay because we're different people! We do love some of the same things, but interpret them in our own homes in different ways. Isn't that the true definition of style? Cookie cutter is so drab.

I had no idea you linked to my kitchen photo, and just happened upon it tonight. Cool! Interesting comment above about them needing to be painted. She mentioned blue, which is the color mine are (they come in gray, beige and blue). I am not great at styling my photos, but I now have more pops of blue in the kitchen. And certainly the living room that opens up to the kitchen has lots of blue, so they make more sense in context. However, I do wish they were a brighter blue. At the time, I searched and searched for blue stools (turquoise was my wish) but there weren't many available at the size and price point I needed. I do know I can have them powdercoated down the road if I'm looking for a color change! And I was thrilled when I saw that Marth used them in her own home. Makes me feel better about my choice!

I've been trying to figure out a way to keep my washcloths and towels close at hand rather than in my pantry. I was considering towel racks like hotels use, but couldn't find any I liked that were reasonably priced. Baskets are a great idea! If you want to go the wire or chrome route, I did find lots of vintage "locker baskets" on eBay and Etsy, as Hunter mentioned. I also found similar baskets at containerstore.com, organizeit-online.com and organizeit.com. Just search for "wire basket."
