Hello! This is Alexis and that's my living room. We banished the coffee table in favor of floor space for our 2-year-old (which she obviously uses!), and the sofa because we wanted space to have more than one upholstered chair/sofa. Behind the blue chair in the second picture is the kitchen counter, which is like a peninsula dividing the kitchen and living room. There is also a little side table by one of the chairs.

I've also been noticing that the wall color does look very putty-ish and the lighter woods seem to blend right into it in these photos. I suspect this is to some degree a trick of the camera (never know, though; looking at photos so often points out something I've totally missed for months!). I think long white curtains, as suggested, will help break it all up and provide more contrast behind the table and desk.

Also, we are in the market for a rug, as suggested. I'm leaning towards something tremendously thick and comfy...

Thanks!!!

We are in the same situation! It drives us absolutely crazy. Consumer Reports seems fairly negative on the efficacy of air purifiers in general, so I have been reluctant to plunk down the money. Also, does anyone have any suggestions for figuring out where these cracks are and how to seal them, or how to find a company that can do all this? The smoke just seems to seep through the walls!

We bought a handmade - but not expensive! - ladybug step stool for my daughter from Tots Only through Etsy. (He's on vacation through the end of Sept. but will be back soon.) My daughter LOVES it.

We have the orange version of this, and our daughter loves it. I think it is very attractive and basically well-designed and well made. However, the pushbar kept falling out (my husband made some sort of alteration that I didn't see, and now it works fine), and we removed the hood entirely, because it just kept slumping over to one side and getting in the way.

I love these! Since plants only come to my house (I assume) to die, these would be perfect...but I'm also too lazy to dust them frequently enough!

I toss all my 2-year-old daughter's shoes into a small basket by the door. It's sort of shallow and wide, so she can find the ones she wants to wear easily. Our shoes get similar treatment, except that we use our coat closet as our shoe basket.

When I saw it - in the catalogue, I think - I just wondered why. It just looks like they forgot something.

From their list of furniture web sites, I love Q Collection. Their things look so beautiful and their mission is ideal. But...I can't get any purchase past the steering committee unless the piece has been tried and tested in person. Unfortunately it's not likely we'll get down to New York for a shopping session any time soon, so I'm hoping a vicarious experience will be sufficient. Has anyone else had any experience with Q Collection furniture - how do the chairs feel when you sit in them, how do the pieces look in a room, and how well made are they? I'm specifically interested in the James chair, the David table, and the Helen bookcase. http://www.qcollection.com/index.php?mode=tfo_homepage

My mother bought a set of elephants for my 2-year-old daughter's room - they make adorable bookends! She gave a set of beautiful dragon bookends to my sister as an engagement gift.

I don't fully understand the "confidence is more important than instinct" anti-rule. My experience is that going with your instinct is, 99% of the time, the best thing to do, but in the face of dissension or doubt from, say, relatives, you sometimes need a lot of confidence to do that.

I sympathize! I cannot bring myself to cut up or recycle MSL (although now that I read these postings, I am thinking - just thinking - of giving it a shot). The magazines are just so glossy and beautiful! I think there's nothing wrong with holding on to one or two of the magazine collections - if you really want to preserve them, store them in archival boxes and sleeves for long-term.

You definitely don't need a changing table. All you need is a blanket or towel on the bed, floor, or other stable flat surface. One thing I would have loved to have to make all this mobile diaper changing easier: http://www.piccolinionline.com/toolboxcaddy.html

Quite gross. If a child has to have their appendix removed, are you going to fix it in formaldehyde and display it on the bookshelf?

Reminds me of the early days of the West Elm catalogue, when the photos had items like...purple baskets full of purple toothbrushes - things that most people would never have, just for the sake of creating a monotone color scheme. What is the point of the white bracelet? It all seems a little loony to me.
