Latest Comments...

Hi all, this is Jessica. Sorry I haven't responded to your questions and comments sooner- I left the country the day this posted, and the day I got back I lost my cat. Thanks for the comments on him- his name was Roman, he was the best cat ever.
What was left out of the description of our place is that I haven't had the time/money to do anything to the kitchen yet. It is the next big project on the list. I'll be replacing the floor and countertops/backsplash, and hopefully the appliances. I'll also be painting the cupboards, and buying an island to better utilize the space.
For those of you that liked the accent piece on the front door, I'm sorry I can't help- it was there when I moved in.
The postcards in the entryway are simply glued to the wall- there is no backing. I just used a craft glue stick.

Thanks!

Generally, once something goes into the landfill it doesn't get enough oxygen to properly biodegrade. So, does it make a difference if you use regular trash bags or biodegradable ones?

Are we sure that bamboo in a textile form is environmentally friendly? I've heard rumors that the chemical baths needed to soften bamboo enough to create yarn or fabric out of it are pretty nasty.

Honestly? Wasn't this posted somewhere else on AT maybe a week ago? What's with all the repeat posts?

Bon Ami is a good alternative to Comet. Look it up at bonami.com.

The compostable options are great, but only if you intend to actually compost them- throwing them into the trash doesn't do any good, as it will take a lot longer for them to decompose in a landfill (lack of oxygen due to how much trash goes into an average landfill). Reusable is the better option, especially if you can get BPA free- consider them part of the goodie bag for the guests.

Compostable disposables are available at Whole Foods, if there is one near you.

The house wasn't remodeled to be green, (which isn't a green thing to do, unless you need to replace components of your house anyway), it was built green. The original article says he was in the "Schematic design phase" when he decided to build more sustainably. Let's get our facts straight, AT!

SOAK is a good alternative to Woolite- smells better, the smell doesn't linger in the clothes, and it is biodegradable, so is better for the environment. You can find this in many yarn stores around the country.

If you want to be really green, and support a local business, look in your phonebook- there are used bookstores in almost every town I've ever been in! They might not have the selection of Amazon.com, but you can call ahead if you are looking for a particular book, and who doesn't love some time in a good used bookstore?

Thanks so much for all the great suggestions! Responses to a couple of comments in particular:

jvoigt- I would really love a couple of those light fixtures!! Thank you so much for offering! I would of course pay you for the shipping- are you set up on Paypal? Two of the fixtures would do it. Thank you thank you thank you!

sarasomeone- I'm actually in Las Vegas, which is one of the hardest places to find used/vintage anything. I did live on the East Coast for a while, and really miss the flea markets/vintage stores/architectural salvage companies...

I will also check out Home Depot and Schoolhouse Electric- thanks!

Shame on you Apartment Therapy!!! Sandy Schimmel Gold is a woman, and you spelled her name incorrectly. Two minutes on her website, which you included a link to, would have given you this information. Thank you for highlighting a very interesting artist, but please, get your facts straight!!

That book looks fabulous, and sustainable architecture is a big interest for me- I work at the Springs Preserve, a large portion of which was built to LEED Platinum level, and using many different ancient and new building techniques, including rammed earth, earth berming, straw bale, and cool towers... I would love to win this book!
