I cleanmy blender but the plastic (lexan, whatever) carafe is cloudy looking. Any magic tips on restoring it to "sparkling clear newness"? I use it a lot for smoothies and I wish it was still pretty because it lives on my counter in clear view of everyone.

Ya know, I like this post. I feel sexier and walk taller when I'm wearing great underwear. And yes, I am partial to thongs (comfy ones DO exist, just don't be crazy and try to buy them in a smaller size than what you need and check out B Tempt'd by Wacoal, super comfy).

I can't be the only woman in her 40's who still enjoys looking sexy when I change from work clothes into loungy clothes after work. Good looking underwear don't have to be super expensive or uncomfortable or unhealthy to wear. I would say ... Try wearing only "good/great" underwear for a week and see if you don't enjoy the added confidence.

One other suggestion ... look for places that you can buy ground covers in bulk if you are going to be replacing some of the grass (or dandelion + moss). I used a place called Classy Groundcovers to buy enough Veronica to blanket our "Hell Strip" at one house (that's the strip between the sidewalk and the road). It worked great and the current owners still have it in place. Probably not right for your area, but that site sold ground covers in 24-packs and bare-root bundles for very competitive pricing.

Congrats on having a large size yard to work with, it was a top priority in our house hunt 3 yrs ago too and although each Fall has us sucking up leaves for hours ... I enjoy the view of our yard every day. It's the gift that keeps giving :)

@ amandaleighb - the drawers in the first pic look a lot like the Ikea PAX drawers, in "Birch". We have an Ikea PAX wall (about 1' wide) in our bedroom and it really works if you manage the amount of clothing you have. Which I guess is true of every closet system (unless you have a closet the size of Oprah's closet).

As terrible as it is to be sick when you are a stay at home parent ... I would have traded places gladly last fall when I was incredibly sick while on a business trip. In mainland China. And I do not speak more than about 6 words of Mandarin.

This was not the first time I've been sick on the road, but it was the first time that I realized that my previous plan to "just get on the first plane to Singapore or Taiwan to get to English fluent healthcare" was unreasonable. I would have failed the airport fever scanners and I felt so incredibly lousy I couldn't imagine braving the airport anyways.

My point? Being sick is never fun, even if you can get yourself to a four star hotel in a major city (where you can't drink the water and ration the minibar contents). I do sometimes get a little tired of the mantra that "nothing is harder than X" whether that be home schooling, being a SAHM, being a SAHD, or being a war widow after WW2, or a road warrior while having the flu. Because as crappy as my situation was, I did HAVE a minibar!

Can we just get to the "coping strategies" and skip the dramatic intros comparing how the lives of other people (like the working spouse) are so much easier?

When I'm really sick I don't have the energy to make soup the way I like it, but I love near a great Szechuan place that makes a beef noodle soup with bok choy. I love it because the noodles come in one container & the soup in another one. So I can make it as "brothy" or "noodley" as I want.

The combination of salty, savory, spicy, and slightly bitter (from the bok choy) is a miracle cure.

It's not even a real coctail ... But if you mix pineapple juice and Malibu coconut rum you sort of get a pina colada. Sort of. In a very distant way.

The other coctail I imbibed often in college was even more lame: The simple Vodka-Sprite Slammer. Now I stick with wine ... its easier.

A million thank-yous are headed your way. I recently bought a marble-topped table at a Habitat Re-Store that I love, but I need to replace the (flaking) gold leaf finish. I was unsure what color to paint it (flat black, matte charcoal, chalk paint in deep gray, ???).

Seeing this is an awesome inspiration and makes it a lot easier to visualize my table with something other than OTT gold. Mine is more of a Hollywood Regency style, so probably not as old as yours, but I think copying your paint color will help show off the beautiful marble.

Since that is a work table as well as an eating space, I would have been SO tempted to put large, lockable casters on the legs so I could move it around as needed. It might make it too much of a cliche, but still so tempting.

I love it, the only thing I miss is seeing the gorgeous trim around the window, but that's easy to address by moving the curtains a bit (as in - nudging them open, not moving any hardware).

For the KitchenAid - it makes the smoothest sweet potatoes ever if you let them run for a little while with the paddle attachment. All the fiber strands get caught on the paddle and the mashed sweet potatoes in the bowl are amazingly smooth. I'm sure it cuts down on the fiber, but I don't worry about it.

If you chill the bowl in the freezer it makes amazing whipped cream with the whisk attachment. Home-made whipped cream is like heaven, especially when dolloped onto a refreshingly tart slice of lemon or key lime pie.

You can use the power of the kitchen aid to easily whip butter with honey, it makes toast into something special.

Have you ever been scrambing ground beef to put in tacos or sauce & you get distracted long enough that the meat cooks as bigger chunks than you wanted? the paddle attachment on the KA will break it up into a perfectly even consistency (great if you want to get a finer 'crumb' of ground beef for a casserole or empanadas).

It's kind of hard to find these art shows or art guilds. A friend and I recently started looking at art - to learn about it and start buying some things for ourselves. It seemed so logical to start with the local art colleges, because they must have galleries. It's been challenging to find out anything about them (hours, how many works or artists are typically on display, etc).

We have had somewhat better luck with independent framing shops who happen to have some local artists or limited print runs, and with some multi-artist co-ops.

Once we have figured this out for our area I will feel like I've solved the Da Vinci code.

3 Ways To Keep A Room From Feeling Flat

There is one place in NC that sells bulbs in bulk ... Like by the half bushel or full bushel. Terra Ceia Farms is the name of it. I used to work with women who swore by their bulbs. I have never ordered from them but if you are looking to plant swaths of different colors, you might have to go with a non-local source (and not a big box retailer).

There is a website called Dave's Garden that has reviews of many online and mail order vendors so if you want to see what others say about their experience, that's a good place to check.

Okay, so mine is really small compared to these ... But ... I have a kitchen that is really, really "out of style" in many ways. It is the hated golden oak and I see so much about people who are updating and tearing out their dated kitchens that even though I don't mind this one, I almost feel like I should hate it. Honestly, the layout works pretty well ...

But I feel like we moved I to the space in a rush 3 years ago and never really took a second look at how we use the space. For instance ... The drawer for silverware is placed EXACTLY where you naturally want to stand to prep anything. So if I am slicing something and DH needs a spoon, I am in the way. And vice versa.

We have frequently used stuff, like dog and cat food, in the corner lazy Susan that's kind of annoying to work with. Right next to that we have a cabinet with cereal and chips that are accessed once or twice a WEEK (pets eat 2x/day).

I feel like I need to re-orient the whole space ... I'm just not sure how to lay it out more intelligently (or less stupidly).

I am a big fan of "luxury practical" gifts. Like ... I am hoping for a Thermopen this year. I need a kitchen thermometer but I really want the Thermopen. At nearly $100, it's not your basic thermometer. Another luxury (for me) is kitchen unitaskers - like a cherry pitter (also on my list). I won't buy one for myself because it seems silly to own something that just does ONE thing. But ... I want one so I can freeze fresh cherries for smoothies in the summer.

Now, one year I got a KitchenAid as a practical gift and it was pretty darn wonderful. It's still going strong, too. That was practical and expensive, and a big luxury compared to the hand-mixer I was using.

The third thumbnail image of kitchen utensils looked like the handles were modeled after chicken feet, so I HAD to click on that.

But no, it was antlers. Much more on-trend than chicken feet, but I think the feet would have been more fun ;)

It is a GREAT update. I know some people hate painting over wood, but I'm guessing that due to the age of those cabinets it would have taken a full-on strip & refinish job to make them look fresh and clean. Being able to sand & paint is MUCH faster.

It looks so updated, and adding the corner cabinet underneath the orphaned wall cabs was smart. I love this kind of makeover - a reasonable budget that returns really great results.

This reminds me that I need to plant some deciduous holly (source of those lovely red berries) in the spring. I like seeing decorations that are obviously fake (silver, white, and blue ornament wreaths) or truly real (pine garland). I think for garland, though, I'm going to have to go with fake real ones because the pine sap is such a bear to get off of everything.

ITA that a Make-A-Wish request is a request - not a society mandated obligation to comply. I'd rather see a celebrity decline than reluctantly say "yes" and sort of half-way engage with the wisher.

I have her new book on my Christmas list. I also like how relaxed and ... calm she seems in the kitchen. Though, I have mad love for my freezer and love to have meals stockpiled in there.

I tried this with the ginger snap crust this year and it FAILED. The gooey goodness of the pecan pie soaked into the crust instead of forming the gooey goodness it's supposed to become. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the sticky wonderful ness it was supposed to be.

Maybe if you used a store bought graham cracker crust it would be thinner and might work better. My ginger snap crust was tasty but thicker than a purchased graham cracker crust.

However, the ginger snap crust worked for pumpkin pie very well.
