My mom loved to host people in our home and her style of entertaining evolved over the course of our lifetimes. I learned from her example, but also from her mistakes. Her focus was often the finished product; an impressive meal, a beautiful space, the perfect setting. As she entertained more, she learned to relax.

I learned that at the end of the day, all you need is a little bit of music in the background, an open bottle of wine, and a good cheese plate with a baguette to entertain well. A stressed-out host is the most awkward thing at party, so planning ahead or keeping it simple are the best options.

I've also found in my lifetime that the group dynamic is more important than the menu. Finding people who will complement each other and enjoy each other's company makes for a fun time, no matter what you serve, or how clean your house is.
