I remember in the olden days that every time I saw a recipe that called for yeast, I just turned the page. And then one day, I decided that I was not going to let yeast be the boss of me. That was the start of many adventures with this living baking buddy. Soon people coveted my Sunday late afernoon soup and homebaked bread supper invites. I said to a friend who is a bread baker that I had not ever baked anything with yeast that didn't turn out well. His response? Luuuuucky! Your post gives "rise" to this memory. my father would bring bagels, lox, and cream cheese to the family every Sunday morning since I can remember. when i had 2 children, one after another, he'd bring this meal to my house...the children's dad would sleep in late on Sundays and my dad would put the first smear of cream cheese on the bagel for him...for when the bum would get outta bed...he should have a bagel ready for him. after all he'd say to the children who couldn't start their bagels until this ritual was complete, he takes care of you, like your mom, all week long. they get the first ones...and then he'd make one for me...ahhh, the children sat and salivated unti it was their turn..... thanks Dana Weekend Meditation: In My Father's Kitchen |

And there was a hush over the city. Pies on parade. Coming from all directions. Ta-da...Ta-da. Celebrating love, friendship and the joy of giving. San Francisco ovens, opening, opening Ta-da...Ta...da. And the hushle and bushle of pies offering themselves to the guests and the joy of sweetness...covers the land. Ta-da...Ta..da..... when my grown up sons were small they loved what they now call Mom's chicken. what's that...oh, it's so embarrassing....plop cut up chicken on a cookie sheet. put pats of butter on top, shake some garlic salt & paprika on top. push in a 350 oven & every 15 min. brush the now melted butter on the top of chicken pieces. Arrrgh, it's so fatty. We ate fattier foods in the olden days and I didn't know better then...I showed them and I showed their partners how to make it...my sons said I had left something out of the recipe because when they made it, it didn't taste the same as when I cooked it. The memory of "Mom's chicken" lives on for the boys, although I find it too fatty to eat now. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Weekend Meditation: Eating Family-Style |

Hey Dana, How wonderful that your post has brought such lively discussion. Connections that help us relate to each other...to the earth...to the other animals. And it appears to me that we're in a paradigm shift. One that's been long coming, that is if we're too continue to be an animal species that's remains part of earth's system. Those of us who pay $7 for eggs aren't all just paying this price cause we MUST have eggs that are delicious. We pay this because we want ALL life to be respected, ours and the animals we eat. And we have a ways to go, as we help our organic, humane farmers stay in business and thrive, so that eventually it may be that the price will be able to go down. This is another part of the conversation that some have brought into their comments. Please do a posting sometime about the efforts being made for everyone to have access to healthy, life affirming food. You are one of my Earth Heroines. Thank you. I love when particular posts create conversations. Sometimes my conversation is with myself, sometimes I post a comment for others to engage with. It's kinda the same for me with eating. Part of the juiciness of this posting is that we're each of us writing of our own POV...room for them all at the table. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Weekend Meditation: Coming Together |

Thank you Dana. This week your writing took me straight to SâMores! Scharffen Bergerâs website has a delicious recipe for making SâMores....and although more work, they take this old recipe to new, fantabulous heights. And yet, the taste of these for my more âsophisticatedâ palate leaves out the sweetness of memoryâ¦of a rare, good time with my Mom when I came home from a camping trip and taught her how to place a toasted marshmallow between two squares of Hersheyâs chocolate held by store bought grahams. Ah, the good, olâ sticky, gooey days when a child offers her loving gift to a parent and they both sayâ¦aaaah! Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Weekend Meditation: Salty-Sweet#comments#comments |
