i always thought that i would never want to stay home when i became a mom. wait--i never even thought that i would be a mom or married! but here i am, married, and mother to an 8 month old boy. i remember saying to the president of my company, "dont worry i will be coming back, im not the stay at home type." at the time i thought that my maternity leave was generous but now in hindsight, its was pretty terrible. i had the time off but i was only paid for two weeks and the disability checks were embaressing.
but now, ive just given notice, realizing that i cant get back this time with my son. no matter what. i am very scared at the prospect of not having adult interaction all day, and this is something that i am working on. i am taking this opportunity (and a very lucky opportunity i have) to be with my son, and work on my own projects. my husband as said numerous times that he would be more than willing to be a stay at home dad, but since his job supplies our family's very nice health insurance he will remain in the work force.
i think that the women who stay home are brave and dedicated but at the same time i also feel that women who are returning to work, and leaving their children in the hands of another (or father or partner) all day are just as admirable. i can speak from both sides here, its exhausting to be a mother no matter what your circumstance.
what i do think? people are debating about it too much and quite often the people who this most intense views on the issues arent even parents at all.

seriously? these lists are pretty intense.

we use a dresser with a changing pad on top. use the top drawer for diapers, creams etc. (we use burts bees butt cream and have never had a rash. also the apricot oil is great after baths for baby massage).

we cosleep. if it scares you i recommend using a boppy lounger to place the baby on if you think you might roll on him.

a miracle blanket, the best swaddler ever.

moby wraps are cheap like 40 bucks and great for infants.

tons of diapers...whatever kind you may use.

you can use an exisiting fan or get a cheap one for white noise.

and above all else...food. be it boob food or bottle food.

we had the first years cosleeper and found it weird to use. we actually had gotten a boppy lounger as a gift. we swaddled our baby for the first three months when he was sleeping because he was super arm crazy. we would swaddle him then lay him on the lounger between us. even though it says not to use the lounger for sleeping..we did. it actually made us feel safer when we started putting him on the actual bed because we were used to having the boppy between us.

bad idea. we have similar ones from design within reach and they are floppy and all the recycling falls out!

a good idea is to keep a container of certain toys hanging over the side of the childs bed or just in the childs room. this way if your child wants to play with those toys, they know that means that they sleep in their own room. forcing your child to sleep in their crib or bed will only make them hate it. remember your parents forcing something on you? let them think that its their idea. granted, my son is only 5 months old right now so i have NO idea whats in store for us when he moves to his room (i might have a harder time with it than he will). as for the monster spray..not so sure about that.

i found a really awesome piggy bank on etsy and filled it with pennies for weight. you can seal off the hole so that pennies dont get consumed or fill it with something else.

my sister got us that lamp from crate and barrel as a wedding gift. we ended up using it in the nursery instead.

hmm..i think that the camera is making the walls look dingy? they are very white.
being apartment renters we have to deal with the wood paneling which we painted white.

also, to comment on dollhouse...we use the wooden utensils at our lakehouse (which has no running water or electricity) because they are biodegradable and we can put them in the compost heap..they are way better than plastic!

my husband and i ordered a marimekko wall hanging with the hardware to hang the fabric. the packaging was insanely overdone. it had at the very least 4x the amount of cardboard that would actually be needed for such an item. it was pretty insane.

call 311. most likely the landlord has to pay for the exterminator.

my husband and i have these metal radiators that are lower and dont look like that. we are really worried about the baby burning himself, we also wondered if that was the responsibility of the landlord to take care of that, covering them? we also have an issue with our water in the past several months where it switches from ice cold to scalding hot and then back again. there are only three apartments in our building and the water was fine before.
it seems like if a landlord has to replace lead paint they should also provide other safety measures. any ideas?

my husband and i were torn over disposable and cloth. cloth actually use a lot of water and chemicals when being cleaned. of course disposable to us was even worse. we came across this awesome site.... www.gdiapers.com. they are flushable biodegradable diapers that work really really well. you should check them out. you can get a starter kit for 24 dollars i think? its worth a shot. you can also set up a weekly or biweekly delivery of the inserts....
