I second Egidio, warning visitors about my dog...although I say it as "reminding." I also make sure to vacuum twice with the HEPA vacuum before people come over, and I try to do that at least 3 hours before they arrive so that I don't just end up stirring up more dust...

Even though I don't have children, I make sure that little ones staying at my house have a drawer of toys just for them (the pirate ship is very popular) and some funky reusable plastic tableware.

Last thing...I make a kit for guests based on the one I take when traveling, stocking a wire mesh bowl with toothbrushes and toothpastes, 'travel size' goodies from hotels, and a few doses of OTC meds: ibuprofen, Rolaids, allergy tablets. You know. Just in case.

My feng shui defense..sometimes I arrange furniture in a room and it just doesn't look right, or feel right...and then I get out the feng shui book and look for new ideas. You don't have to buy into the whole thing...but as kaanswfm points out, "something worked, finally."

My best feng shui apt. fix was the mirror hung over my desk...out of necessity, my desk faces a wall and I sit with my back to the room's only window. I literally _could not sit_ at my desk until I hung the mirror up...it's high enough that I don't see myself in it, but I do see the reflection of the sky and daylight. $20 made a whole awkward room work a lot better.

I agree with the "buy really good stuff and not 'placeholders.'" At the very least, buy things you _really_ like. I have a 1950s Formica table with a really unique design that I would not trade for anything...it wasn't very expensive, but I love it. Another thing that helps with the 'hunt for good stuff' is making friends with local antique / thrift stores. If they know what you're looking for, they'll often call you when something comes in. I got a beautiful dry sink (which I use as a buffet / sideboard) this way, along with a funky Victorian bookshelf and a really neat men's dresser. (For all the matchy matchy folk out there...it's true...stuff in my house doesn't match, but visitors point out that my house feels 'welcoming and comfortable,' and that's what I think a house should be...)

Looks like wheat grass is the way to go! Like Deneph, I have a black thumb, but I grow w.g. for my dog. (I don't juice it, but I do cut it regularly and put it in her food.) If you elect to grow it and don't use it yourself, odds are you know someone who will use it. (It's good for pets, especially those with easily upset tummies, to have from time to time.)

I like lag's idea of mapping it out with blue painter's tape and I would _definitely_ do that before buying the thing. I also agree that I would be a little wary of so much dark wood, but my bedroom gets no direct sunlight so I'm biased. Last thing, it's bad feng shui (or whatever) to sleep with stuff under your bed. I know it sounds CRAZY and I live in an apartment without a lot of storage, but WITH a lot of stuff...and when I took things out from under the bed, I slept a lot better. Here's another storage suggestion...I love Expedit shelves from Ikea. I've found that combining the dark wood shelves with the green magazine file boxes lets me get great storage for a variety of things--blankets, sheets, towels, sweaters, etc, and they look neat (clean lines) as furniture. You can line a wall with them OR use them as a room divider (as I do...) But, I'm a poor grad student, so I tend to go with cheap and versatile...

This IS weird....but a lot of (over-educated children of the white middle and upper class) people I know are taking massage classes with or without their partners. So maybe it's for them? I would never own one, though, sheesh...
