Here's a recipe in case you can't find the pre-made roux (or want to make it 100% homemade): http://www.justhungry.com/japanese-beef-curry

@karenbowness, @sharona1700, @christine m. I've been seeing the curry roux blocks (Golden Curry, Vermont Curry, House Curry) in regular 'ole grocery stores too. Now, I live in California, but in a part that has a small-to-non-existent Japanese population and no Asian grocers to speak of. Check the "Asian" or "ethnic" aisle - you'd be surprised! The curry is so simple to make and I make large batches for my friends and hubby who crave the stuff :) Tastes like childhood to me.

I'm half-Japanese and I get the flush very severely. My answer is to just not drink.

It blows me away that so many people affected by Asian flush still drink at all, considering the studies that prove that even LIGHT drinking by these individuals increases the likelihood of esophageal, stomach, throat and mouth cancer by 20 TIMES.

I'd bet money most of you look down on smokers too, huh? Sheesh.

OH, and another one is the person who goes into the express lane with obviously more than the limit - soooo you're so much busier and better than those of us who follow the guidelines/rules? Or are you illiterate?

I find it mildly irritating when people leave things on shelves where they don't belong, but I understand how it happens sometimes.

What REALLY gets me is when people leave their trash on the shelves - plates or napkins from samples, Starbucks cups (often), used tissue (REALLY?!) or the detritus from someone's deli/on-the-go meal. Ugh.

WOW. This is, hands-down, my absolute favorite tour! I must be an AT newb because I've not heard of the glorious Dixie before! "[P]arody on 'grown-up' décor" may be my new decorating MO, so I can incorporate my own brand of satire and silliness with the "responsible adult" decor my family thinks I need in my home. I think I'm in love.

I just bought some of this drastically marked-down stuffing from a JoAnn's with the same intent, but it occurred to me - how washer-friendly is this stuff? I was thinking of stuffing an crochet doll for my niece, but does that mean it can never be thrown in the washer?

I think $500 for a custom chair IS a bargain, provided the craftsmanship is good and it lasts. I've paid that much and more for crappy furniture that sags in a matter of weeks.

BrianneA, you said they're durable - can you clarify why you think that? I'm a novice furniture shopper who's make way too many mistakes (particularly with chairs and sofas) that I hope to rectify with future purchases.

I agree that it's an inspiring story and they really are lovely pieces. Kudos to you, Nick Sario!

PhotobugLA, have you tried military surplus stores? Some carry more clothes than gear, others have tons of tents, tarps, bags, etc. Prices vary too.

Kudos to you, m'elizabeth, for saying what I was thinking! When shopping for friends' baby showers, I'm always blown away by the amount of single-use or uni-tasker junk that's marketed to parents under the guise that it's "safer", "better" or "greener" for their children. I grew up perfectly fine and capable without my parents having a bottle warmer OR cooler for the car, 4 distinctly different diaper bags, a bottle dryer and separate sanitizer, pacifier holders, grocery cart covers (isn't it just a blanket w/ feet holes?), etc. etc.

I've taken the Alton Brown approach to shopping (when applicable): does this item serve more than a single purpose? Could something else I own already do the job?

I don't consider myself to be living "green", I just think of it as common sense, frugality and rejecting the force-fed notion that consumerism/spendingmoney/newstuff=good! I re-use, re-purpose, compost or recycle most of my trash (my neighbors are amazed that I only have to put out my small trash bin every 3-4 weeks) and can't justify the cost buying many things brand new.

I just wish we could get more cosmetics and toiletries manufacturers in America to sell refills instead of forcing me to buy a new plastic bottle every time. And I'd like to see milk in a bag too! :)

What a lovely home! Thank you for the wonderful inspiration - I especially like the rhino head and think I'll ask the hubby to sculpt me one...

Can anyone source the glass dome/cloche things on the sideboard in the dining room? (#12) I can't seem to find a great selection of sizes and shapes... then again, I don't know what they're called so I can't effectively search for them! Thank you!

Most of my flying essentials have already been named, but one of mine is a travel size container of gentle facial cleanser like Cetaphil.

The facial cleansing wipes make my skin feel awful (and NOT clean), but the Cetaphil can be used with and without water (I've used in when a flight was cancelled and I had to sleep in the car), and in very dry climates and airplanes, that extra moisture on the skin is a welcome relief. I don't go anywhere without it!

Oh, and an extra pair of thick socks.

Jmorri, you might be thinking of WeOlive www.weolive.com. They have tons of local olive oils (local to me on the Central Coast, anyway), vinegars and other goodies. If you're ever in CA, it's a great place to go tasting. Last time I was there, I tasted a Blood Orange olive oil that was to die for!
