yup, ditto Emmers, that's exactly it--they're non-slip dots and they hold dirt like crazy. i also used soft scrub and a mountain of effort, and was able to get them clean at our old place.

handwash for all articles of manageable size, definitely, with woolite soap. dreft is also good, and very hypo-allergenic.

"I suggest going with a wood fireplace as well, its something you wouldn'y usually see with a real fireplace and will really look good with many decors."

I think maybe Rebecca meant a fireplace with a wood surround, not a wood-burning (i.e., "regular") fireplace?

Anyway, as an alternative, there are some slick little kits by a company called EcoSmart which burn some kind of distilled ethanol. No flue or connections required. Probably not cheap; they have them at DDC on Beverly Blvd. if you want to find out.

October to February is an unconscionably long time. You're more patient than I--I would have been withholding rent pending repairs by December! Yikes.

Well, a picture rail is actually a molding that runs around the upper part of the wall, with little lip that you can hook onto to suspend pictures from...although the ledges are nice too.

Actual picture rails I think can be very cool--they give a clean datum for arranging things, and are a visually interesting way to hang art. I vote yes.

our cat has selected a particular chair in the dining room, which he likes when it's pushed under the table (must be cozier that way). nap time begins at 11am, and if the door to the dining room is shut, then GWOW!--there's a sit-in protest until someone opens it.

Wow--NAPO, just like the moderator suggested in the article. What value could this website possibly provide, since Google will tell you anything?

Oh, wait. It could provide a concentrated forum for people to talk about their opinions/experiences with regard particular services, designers or products.

Of course, it could also provide a near-constant flow of snark...to which, admittedly, I have just contributed.

If you're looking change the layout of your closet for something more efficient, I've had some luck with California Closets (http://www.californiaclosets.com/). They do a free consult, so even if you don't wind up buying their product, they might be able to give you some good ideas.

If you're just looking for someone to organize your closet using your existing fixtures (rods, shelves, etc.)...then I wouldn't know who to recommend.

Wow! Well, I think we need one dissenter here. Tile to the ceiling is more functional, but your tile choices make it sound like you might be going for more of a vintage look (like a lot of prewar apartments in New York, which have the subway tile and hex floors?). If so, holding the tile off the ceiling 20"-24" is the way to go--making sure to use a corner bullnose tile for the outside corners.

It's a very classic look, and truthfully (no offense to the other posters!!), subway tile run to the ceiling at the shower is kind of a rental-apartment detail, particularly in new construction buildings--probably again, because it is more functional.

As far as function does go, I also have had a bathroom with the lower tile layout and never had big problem with mold--although I did use a mildew-killing admixture in the paint.

That fence is hardly Reed Hildebrand's original idea. Luis Barragan was doing the same detail in the 1950's and '60's, long before they were in business--and it's a detail done currently by any number of high end landscape architects.

But you're right, there is absolutely no way to impale yourself on that, unless you're planning to fall off of a house.

probably they cut out a slot through the bottom and back of the drawer, to allow the drawer to slip past the waste plumbing.

some other companies manufacture sink vanities that have drawers; durvit for example makes one with a sideless & backless drawer, to solve the same problem.

well, you're right that it's not openly clashing, but...i still don't think it's so good. you'd expect all that texture to produce richness, but instead it just looks flat. and a little annoying.

no?

ditto herding the cats into the bedroom for the evening--we have a 1br apartment, so we arrange for the cats to sleep in our room rather than out with our guest(s). also, we vaccuum like mad before overnight guests arrive, in a (possibly somewhat futile) attempt to minimize the cat hair trauma.

it is very comfy--but you have to be careful with the stitching on the pintucks. I have had mine for about 6 months, and have found that the thread on them snaps pretty easily. It's a little frustrating.
