My mother gave me two small side chairs that used to live in her office, and I am reupholstering them myself. I was quoted $250 per chair from several upholstery shops (in the DC area), which seemed a little absurd to me. I figured that if I mess it up, I won't be losing much because the chairs were free. So far, the project is coming along very well. I say that if you have some sewing skills (so you can make cording, do seams, etc.) and are patient, DIY upholstery is totally feasible.

Washington, DC
I pay just under $1300/month for a newly renovated one-bedroom in Petworth. It's not as "established" a neighborhood as, say, Dupont Circle or Adams Morgan, but I live a 3-minute walk from the Metro and lots of new shops and restaurants are starting to go in nearby. The highest I'd go would be $1450 or so if utilities were included, and the lowest would be $1000 for a studio or basement apartment.

Beckyjo87, I think the problem is that the government is already involved with what kids are served at school. It's my understanding that schools don't get a whole lot of choice in what they get to serve under the Federal School Lunch Program--and due to a surplus or subsidies or the potato lobby or whatever, kids end up getting served lots of french fries and tater tots.
