I have a good friend who loves to cook, and hates doing the dishes. So much so that his kitchen was sometimes a truly horrifying place, because the sink would be overflowing, with stacks on the counters, on the floors, etc. He could go weeks (literally) without doing dishes.

His habits finally changed when he got mold in his kitchen, and literally couldn't do dishes there. He took everything he had into the bathroom and put it in the tub, and filled the tub with soapy water. He couldn't shower until he'd done the dishes.

Now, he puts his dishes in the tub and fills it with water before he goes to bed, and washes them all super quick in the morning before he showers. It's an unconventional system for sure, but it works for him.

What was the coffee? That prose is a little lurid for a morning cup of joe, but maybe that's just me.

This is one of the first "maker" videos I've seen where I've thought, "OH, so that's why that dude gets paid to do that." I'd never have the patience to do a wall like this, esp not the finicky hand-painted corners. The results are great, though.

I do love the attention to detail he brings to this.

So neat! It's not really surprising that contemporary notions of comfort come out of the shifting classes of the 18th century, but still neat to read about. More posts like this, please!

Yep, looks like a Berlin apartment. I visited some good friends in Berlin for the first time this year, and their apartment had a very similar layout, incredibly tall ceilings, and deep windows. Their kitchen was also a hodgepodge of vintage armoires, wooden tables, and wooden shelves on brackets. The thought of arriving in a new apartment only to have to furnish an entire kitchen (right down to the cupboards!) made me understand IKEA so much better.

Lovely place, thanks for sharing! Reminds me that I should get back to Berlin soon!

That is the most AMAZING print. Why are all the ladies shielding their eyes? Deference? And are they all ladies?

My piece of art to frame is also a japanese wood block print that my mom bought in Japan several years ago -- a lady in a gorgeous swirling kimono.

I completed one of my projects last week -- installing shelves in my storage unit so I can get everything off the floor (in the event of a flood), and to make room for my bike. The idea is that I can move more things from my closet to the storage unit for the "off season".

Still to do:
1. Go through closet and do a goodwill purge
2. Finish work on my landing strip. I'd created an effective one several years ago, but it's currently overwhelmed by unopened bills, and other stuff that needs to be put away.
3. Go through kitchen and do a purge.
4. Go through books and do a purge.

I've scheduled my party for mid-February, so we should be good by then. So much still to do!

@Sarajanie -- I use masking tape. I've got a roll that lives in one of my kitchen drawers, plus a sharpie black marker. Works a treat, looks tidy, doesn't require fancy anything, and better yet, is insanely cheap.

Are you guys in Ballard? Pretty sure I know exactly which former church you're talking about. I've always wanted to see the inside!

I just tried this taking a more french approach -- milk instead of water with the eggs, and fresh goat cheese at the bottom of the ramekin, with cracked pepper on top, served with buttered toast. So delicious! Will definitely try the chinese version soon.

The last "luncheon" I attended was in my final year of high school at an all girls' catholic school, as part of "Etiquette Day". (No joke.) This was the last vestige of pre-feminist traditions at the school, from an era where it was a finishing school for young women rather than an educational institution for the next generation of leaders...

I'm in Seattle, and lucked out with an apartment (that's not even on the top floor) where I can see all of Ballard, Magnolia, and Fremont, and then see out to Puget Sound and the Olympic mountains. Even in Seattle, there aren't too many people who can claim that they can see glaciers from their bed.

My rent is very reasonable, and though the apartment is a little small, I've stayed for four years because of the view.

In Seattle, we got over/got bored by Chihuly a loooooong time ago. Funny that for most of us here, his works suggest dull corporate art rather than the avant garde.

Yay Phinney Ridge! I know right where this house is, and it is beautiful. Though, truth to be told, there are lots of understated beauties in this neighborhood.

Frank Lloyd Wright built one of his first private commissions for my great grandfather, who was one of the owners of the Winslow Brothers Iron Works. Elevator screens created by the Winslow Brothers are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Anyway. They sold the house some 60 years ago, and much of the furniture that FLW designed for the space has been sold over the years. My grandparents still have some of the objects from the house -- a pair of FLW armchairs, a gorgeous fire screen with wrought iron dragons, and lots and lots of japanese woodblock prints.

I think I'm the only person in the family who still thinks this was a real loss. My grandparents are like, "do you know how much of a pain in the ass it would be to have to live in a dark, heavy, 'historic' home?" They love the history associated with the objects they have, but there isn't much regret that the house was sold so long ago.

I have three vintage fruit packing labels that I framed a while ago. The labels were super cheap (each under $7) while being graphically very strong and colorful. I bought off-the-shelf frames for them (about $25 each), and then had mats professionally cut (another $25 per mat). It was a little expensive, but they look AWESOME. I get lots of comments on them when friends come over.

The floral fabric on the chair is from Ikea. It's great stuff -- I've made several things with it, including a couple of bolster pillows and a little makeup bag. It's even better in person.
