Microfiber cleaning cloths have replaced sponges, rags, and dishcloths for me. I like them because they don't get smelly as quickly. Always air-dry them after washing, though, and if you can do it outdoors in the sun, even better.

Pots with a mirror finish on the outside: Even if you usually leave everything to air-dry, wipe the outsides dry with a microfiber or linen cloth as soon as you finish washing them. Much easier than scrubbing at water stains later.

Turn one of the sofas so it has its back to the empty space. Put a narrow table against the back of the sofa with 2 dining chairs. Voila, a dining area that doesn't take up the flow space. If you also rearrange the TV, it gives you extra theatre-type seating for watch parties.

Salad! Here in deepest Oklahoma, the baby Foreman grill is my best friend. It hardly heats up the kitchen at all, and cooks very quickly. My basic summer salad is one meat (pork chop, shrimp, chicken cutlet, salmon) cooked on the grill and sliced over a bed of romaine or cabbage, one cheese (gorgonzola, parmesan, feta, bleu) crumbled on top, one fruit (canned peaches, strawberries, blueberries, kiwi), maybe some tomato or avocado, and a complementary dressing (ginger and rosemary, Italian, champagne vinegar and shallot, tzatziki) which might have also been used to marinade the meat if my brain wasn't too fried.

Another BJURSTA fan here. Perfect for me, as I usually dine alone but like to entertain. I'm considering replacing the desks in my office with them as well.

I tend to agree -- good idea, but a zingier paint color and fresh hardware would have really made it pop. But yes, the original piece definitely had potential -- well spotted!

The Bavinger House, built by Bruce Goff in Norman OK (and alas, recently destroyed) had a bizarre semi-suspended conversation pit "living room pod": http://www.flickr.com/photos/thompsonphotography1/5174751067/ Look at other photos in the flickr set for the same idea applied to a sleeping pod and children's play pod.

I agree about the trapezoid thing -- just getting rid of that would open up SO may possibilities. It shortens the height of the room and draws too much attention to that stepped ceiling. If nothing else -- if you can't take it off the wall -- either paint it red, or paint the whole bumped-out area surrounding the fireplace white, leaving the bookcase interiors red. That would be the cheapest and quickest improvement you could make while you live with the rest of the space for a while.

Heck, it takes MORE energy to be disorganized! Just think of all the time you have to spend searching through stuff. And it's mentally exhausting too!

I have a small electric fireplace in my bedroom -- cost me around $100. I turn down the thermostat at night, then I turn the fireplace on with the remote when my alarm goes off and hit the snooze button. By the time the alarm goes off again, my slippers are toasty and I can bear to get out of bed and bump up the main thermostat. (Even a model without a remote will work if you set up some sort of in-line switch right by your alarm clock.)

How about 1 pound for person for boneless turkey, 2 pounds for whole turkey? That's how I normally judge. I still don't know if I'm having 2 or 4 for Thanksgiving, so I have 2-3 lb boneless breasts.

That floor mat (#4) isn't really cork, just a picture of corks. But I've made trivets like that out of wine corks and cheap wooden picture frames or trays. Just glue them in place with wood glue. Makes a good bulletin board, too.

Target carries a reversible whole-cloth quilt. The quilting is in rows of ovals. I have it in bright green reversing to darker green. It's matte, not shiny like the picture above, and lightweight, so more suitable for summer.

Since my primary decorating scheme is black, white, and bright grass green, I just add orange -- that takes me through Thanksgiving, when I switch it out for bright red! But this is a gorgeous set of colors.

It's a great kitchen combo, though I don't see any in the photos. I had a kitchen with black and white tile floors, white cabinets, and mustard yellow walls. Looked great!

Ikea's Bjursta series tables are also nice, with their concealed leaves. I got the 36" square one in black. Solid, heavy, and a bit more challenging to put together that their usual tables. I'm going to get another one for a desk.

Definitely something you want to think carefully about. I had a nice apartment with great trees outside the windows and a roomy floor plan -- but other buildings in the same complex had terrible problems, and kids from the even worse complex down the street used our pool all the time and made horrific noise. But by compromising for two years, I saved enough for a down payment on a house. It all depends on if you have a long-term goal in mind and how long you can stand compromising. That said, don't ever go so cheap you feel too unsafe, and add your own safety measures once you move in!

And may I add to CraigslistDecorator -- KEEP the instructions! You never know when you will need to fix something, find out what a replacement part is called, or take something apart for moving or storage.

In fact, I'll add a whole new thing that makes adulthood easier: Keep good records. Get a filing system going, keep all your bills and owner's manuals and lease agreements and insurance policies and stuff together, and keep it up to date. You will save yourself so much time and tsuris in the long run that the effort you put in up front is all worth it.

I don't have a room just for a library, but three walls in my living room/dining room are floor-to-almost-ceiling bookshelves, plus one wall in my study/workroom. I used to have unfinished Ikea Ivar pine shelving, but during this move I stained the uprights rosewood and the shelves golden oak. Looks fantastic! In the study I painted them black. You'd think a librarian might get tired of being surrounded by walls of books all day, but no. There's nothing cozier.

I live 3.5 hours away from Ikea. I've tried buying similarly cheap stuff from WalMart or Target, but they can't match the quality or style. I've been buying their Ivar bookshelves for 25 years now -- and who else is going to keep a basic in production that long? (Though I'm not crazy about the recent switch to plastic ends on the shelves.) I just put together a Sauder display unit in my new house and it's AWFUL in comparison to Ikea furniture. I go about 3-4 times per year when I really need something or when I'm in Dallas for some other reason. I take a list but allow some wriggle room for impulse purchases. I have certain rest stops and gas stations I hit, and I try to make it in time for free coffee in the morning!
