A Non-Shopper's Black Friday To-Do List

oh. my. goodness. i think i just drooled on my keyboard...

perfect timing - i'm in charge of all the desserts for a baby shower this weekend and needed a recipe for chocolate ganache frosting!!! the chocolate cake recipe i use is similar to this one, though. thanks!

hands down, like many have already said: baggers who do not bag properly!!! i had a guy once who was so busy remarking on every item (oooh, is this good? oh... i don't buy this brand. really?) i was buying casually toss canned kidney beans right on top of a loaf of bread. that was when i stepped in with a firm, "excuse me, i'll take it from here, thanks." and proceeded to finish bagging the rest of my groceries.

another time, a girl who looked like she just looooovvvvved her job, threw the bag of grapes i had so carefully picked out into the bag and then started piling stuff on top!!! that's when i had to interject and say, "don't bruise the grapes!!!" then she just walked away and i bagged the rest of the groceries myself. granted, i probably made it sound like, "DON'T BRUISE THE GRAPES, BITCH!!!" but still.

and lastly, i AM the stay-at-home-mom in the yoga pants and $300 leather bag with my toddler out shopping. BUT i time these outings right after feedings or naps, never go when school gets out around 3 or when people get off work around 5:30/6, i get in and out as fast as i possibly can, and if you couldn't tell by now, i bag my own stuff. so far, we haven't had any tantrums or meltdowns... *knocks on wood*

thanks for this. I just wiped down all the doorknobs in the house with some Clorox wipes, tightened the screws on all the switch plates (random, I know), and wiped down the bathroom door (which gets dirtier than you realize). I sorted/cleaned out our closets and bookshelves before new year's and just dusted/swept/mopped the kitchen floor this weekend. Next up: ordering new prints for all our frames =)

for those of you that just put your baby in a big bowl at the back of the tub, just how big are your bathtubs?! Am I missing something here? And let them play with toys on the bathroom floor?! I don't know about you, but I haven't had time/energy/the mind to clean the bathroom floor in weeks... Never mind the hard, porcelain/ceramic toliet, sink, tub, etc.

I agree with pmg1704 - we just got an S95 and LOVE it. It's fancy/hi-tech when you want it to be/have time to mess with it AND really good/damn near perfect in auto mode when you want it capture those special moments every day.

our little one isn't yet walking, but i'm already on the lookout for jerseys for him to wear when we go out to theme parks, museums, aquariums, etc. i think i read it here on ohdeedoh... put your kid in a sports team jersey when you go out to big, crowded places. then if he/she gets lost, it's easier to spot a kid in a bright orange and purple steve nash jersey (go suns!!!) than if he/she was just wearing blue pants and a white t-shirt.

hmm... good point, reddylee.

admittedly, plain marshmallows make me kind of queasy. so the chemical addition from the sterno would probably be terrible. cute idea, though, you're right. ah well.

by "steno," do you mean "sterno"? cuz i have a few cans of sterno leftover from my son's baptism bbq and this is a great idea for using them up!!! now to procure some marshmallows...

made this tonight for my father-in-law's birthday... it came out tasting more like a scone, believe it or not. maybe because i baked it as a bundt? either way, it was probably the prettiest cake i've ever made, but i don't think i'd make it again =)

we're in a small, 2 bedroom apt and are very much practical, resourceful, less-is-more, simple/natural vs. battery-operated, kind of people. we're also nerds in that we read and researched books/magazines/blogs and asked our friends about all things baby before we were even pregnant. our baby is now 3 and a half months old and i think we've done pretty well so far =) i stay at home and breastfeed exclusively; we also cloth diaper.

we couldn't live without (somewhat in order of importance): convertible car seat; fisher price rock n play; miracle blanket (only for the first 6 weeks); moby wrap; skip hop changing pad; re-purposed twin-size bed for changing diapers/clothes and tummytime/playing/reading; puj tub; burping cloths; ergo carrier; space saver high chair; long sleeve onesies; crib

we appreciate, but could do without: boppy (tummy time, sitting); brest friend (for a change of scenery); bouncer seat and playmat (which we got for 50% off through a friend's discount); sony baby monitor (if only for volume, not so much distance); hooded towels

we didn't care for:
- pack and play (a friend got one for us, "i know it wasn't on your registry, guys, but you NEED this!"); infant carrier seat (same friend doesn't understand why we don't want to carry our baby in a bucket); diaper genie; wipe warmer; bottle warmer, drying rack, etc.; that seahorse sleep helper thingy; swing; pacifiers

we haven't really used yet: ikea poang chair; a&a blankets; booster seat; shopping cart cover

we never used: boppy newborn lounger (he was too big for it, i think); mittens; blankets

we splurged on: diaper bags (jack spade for my husband and kate spade for me, BUT both were at outlet/discount prices)

we're contemplating: jumperoo/exersaucer thing (so he can stand/be upright vs. lounging/sitting in his bouncer/highchair/boppy) and/or a bumbo seat

we were very fortunate to have been gifted 90% of these things, which i know isn't the case for everyone. we were especially surprised and moved to tears (i was, at least) when we received the car seat, breast pump, ergo, stroller, and poang chair at our shower. in the end, we only bought the crib and diaper bags ourselves.
