Even though I live on a very limited income I just finished purging my kitchen - cooking - food storage of any and all plastic. I shop farmers markets, butcher shops or meat section of supermarkets where meats are wrapped in wax coated paper. I crocheted my own produce bags with linen or cotton string and even though I try to avoid any/all plastics - the darned stuff is everywhere! There is a better way - plastic can be made from soybeans, hemp and many other biodegradeable sources. Until that happens - well - I'll just keep trying.

When I was a kid growing up in Southern Illinois, my grandmother would put together a dish starting with sauteing meat (whatever we had) adding onions, garlic and tomatoes and just enough liquid to cook the pasta that she added and we called it "Slum-gulion" - I don't think we thought of it as Italian but it was and still is - I still stir together these combinations and while I cook and stir I remember those days back in my grandmothers kitchen - cooking on a coal-fired stove with a real "Ice-box" and a big farm table where most of the preparation was done. She had 1 large hoosier cabinet in the kitchen and everything else was kept in the large walk-in pantry.
Childhood memories are the best & the best part is - my children will cook this dish for their children and tell the story of my grandmother's kitchen - this is what family is all about.
