This weekend, we are trying our hand at country wines! Today it was parsnip, tomorrow we'll tackle the rhubarb. We are living in England, and everyone is telling us these are really wonderful-- plus the ingredients are very inexpensive, so it will be a fun experiment. Next time, we'll go for elderflowers and nettles... What's Cooking This Weekend? Weekend of May 19-20, 2012 |

I recently moved in to a home in England with almost zero built-in storage. This was especially a problem in the bathroom. Fortunately, there was room for a big dresser, and this one piece has solved all of our storage needs for that room. The dresser was in our dining room in the last house, and so was a rug we moved into the bathroom-- I like mixing furniture up, not having a piece only work for one kind room. We just got back from a trip across the English Channel with our car... Shopping in a French grocery store was such a treat that I didn't even think to bring back cooking equipment-- we just love all the food we could bring into our kitchen! I grew up in East L.A., and we kept a ton of chickens and rabbits. It may not have been technically legal. One of our neighbors, who was always calling the police on us (for example, for running a day care, since there were seven kids in our family) turned us in for having animals-- no roosters, though! The inspector was shown around the back yard as my mom gushed about how educational and healthy it is for children to be around animals and to learn how to take care of them. By the end of the visit, he just said, "Lady, let's pretend I was never here. And be sure you never get a rooster." Then, a few years later, we moved to the Philippines, where we had pigs, geese, turkeys, monkeys, parrots, goats... and chickens (including roosters.) The end. :) One Family's Story: Keeping Chickens in LA |

Yes, this post is very relevant, especially considering the desire to "live small." It doesn't mean always being ruthless. I have moved a lot in the past year, and had to part with so many things that I had considered special. But there were just a few items I had to make quite an effort to preserve, and I am so glad that I did. In a completely new life, they have grounded me and given me a tie to my past. They are not "valuable" in the traditional sense, but mean so much to me. I shared about this here: Sentimental Belongings: The Stories Behind the Objects |

Definitely nuts and string cheese. I know that I will let my kid have juice on the plane, and I don't want to add to the sugar buzz any more than that, since hyperactive is the LAST thing a kid on a long flight should be. Protein is our friend. Trail mixes are great, because picking out the favorite pieces is a whole activity in itself. Flying with Kids: What Snacks to Pack for the Plane |

The Cline Zinfandel was a favorite at a restaurant I worked at, and I loved to pair it with chocolate. So good, and a great price point, too. My House Wine: Cline Cellars' Zinfandel |

@Cesh_005-- I am now living in Bury St. Edmunds, a small town between Cambridge and Norwich. That is really funny about your grandmother! We have one like that back in the US... I imagine that, for older generations, the idea of going to just ONE place, once a week must feel like a real luxury. Maybe it seems crazy to go shopping every day like they used to, when you can get away with one-stop-shopping. Interesting! Shop Like a Parisian Weekend Meditation |

I have lived in the Philippines, the USA, Germany, and now England. The US is really the only place that was oriented toward shopping once a week-- everywhere else, getting food is just part of the daily routine. I loved getting up before sunrise as a child to go with our helper to the open market to haggle over meats and produce for the day's meals. Shop Like a Parisian Weekend Meditation |

I really love this home-- so warm, and refreshingly unstaged. My favorite idea is putting a child's finger painting inside a vintage gilt frame-- so clever! Julie's Vermeer-Worthy Apartment in Paris House Tour |

Such a beautiful kitchen. I love the simplicity, and the emphasis on the materials used. I also enjoyed the design of the cabinets, even details like mixing painted wood, metal, and stained wood hardware-- the effect is really interesting! Dakota's Green, Shaker-Inspired Kitchen Kitchen Tour |

Oh, and here is her room, which I think is a sweet reflection of her five year old self: http://and-here-we-are.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/into-mouse-hole.html Decorating Kids' Rooms: How Much Input Did Your Child Have? |

I do get kind of tired of seeing all these kids rooms that are clearly designed more for the parents than the children. I think kids themselves are so interesting, and their rooms should tell us more about them than us (the parents.) The older my daughter gets, the more her room reflects her tastes and passions. I will say, however, that I do encourage my daughter to explore colors other than pink. Pink is certainly allowed, but not the only color that exists!
