Geez, people, where is the compassion? Even the best behaved babies and children will have their moments. Living in such close proximity to others comes with its inconveniences, including noise, be it from neighbors having raucous sex, yappy dogs, children, etc. One could easily say that if these people don't like the sounds of humanity, they should move to the country. As a parent I think my perspective is biased in favor of the overtired babies and sleep-deprived parents of little ones who are just trying to figure out a way to survive the days and nights, so I think hating on the young families is a bit heartless. If there is any karma, maybe these haters will one day be blessed with beautiful, healthy children who will nonetheless be poor nappers and light sleepers, and then they will know real bittersweet torment.

This is a great post. Wish I could think of a way to send it to a handful of friends/family members as a PSA without offending them. We love to have these folks over but really don't like finding their cat/dog hair all over the place, including our food, for days or weeks on end after a visit. Or accepting dinner invitations while trying not to cringe, knowing that the dinner will be accompanied by the aroma of cat poop or wet dog smell. Also, fleas. Yeah. The flea bites, days of itching, and months of flea-bite scars...

And I know it's possible to have pets and not have your home smell or look like a kennel. My sister has a cat and you wouldn't know it from the looks or smell of her place - the litter box is cleaned once a day and kitty is simply not allowed on the human furniture.

Nice! I wish I had an unused closet to convert into a craft space.

The pleated strip quilt is ADORABLE, but with two boys under the age of four I can see it being a pain to use at the park or beach (with the sand working itself into the pleats and being difficult to shake out). I've seen loads of sand come out of places I didn't know it could get into, usually onto my bedspread.

we use the exact same bench in our entryway. Very sturdy, love it. We've paired it with the PORTIS hat rack http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60099791/, which we spray painted white and replaced most of the metal rods with birch dowels to match the bench.

I love this idea and have been wondering how to create a sacred space in a small house with two very mobile kids under the age of 4 (i.e., how to keep it from being destroyed on a daily basis). Hanging stuff on the walls (photos, images, words, etc.) is a great idea, since anything left on a surface (candles, beads, frames, flowers, etc.) would sooo not last in this house. Thanks!

I have two boys under 4 and I definitely prefer to see the grime so I can get to it. (and trust me, little crawly babies and toddlers are often wanting to be picked up/nursed/danced with/comforted, so whatever is on your floor WILL be on you.) Also, mottled or dark counters and flooring in places like the kitchen and bathroom drive me nuts, since those are the two places that (ahem, esp. with three males in the house) I definitely WANT to see the yuck asap. That said, there is a lot of white in our house (walls, chairs, couch) and it all stays *relatively* clean without hired help.

and that floor looks immaculate.

I love the blue and green, but then again i've decorated my boys' room with lots of blue and green. But I am jealous, jealous, jealous that Q has been sleeping through the night since 7 weeks! My 14+ month old is STILL waking up anywhere from 2-5 times per night. Perhaps I should repaint the walls in his room this particular shade of green...? (I'll try anything at this point!)

My inner child wants this! And my exterior adult might do something similar for my two boys.

I clicked on this post because I love the look of the pale aqua walls in the guest room (recently painted my sons' room and was trying for that almost translucent blue water effect, but it fell short). So, please share, what color is it, exactly? And unlike a previous commenter, I do love the color scheme in that room, doesn't matter if it was trendy a few years ago, it's still a beautiful, serene combination.

Love, love, LOVE! We just had the good fortune of buying a mid-1940s house that still has lots of its original charm (despite previous owners' mickey mouse updates, oh god the "updates"), and this post comes at the perfect time. I really really want to live in a beautiful, comfortable, personal home NOW but if it takes three years to create a home as beautiful and as thoughtful as yours, I will just have to take it slow. Thank you for the reminder and the inspiration. Your paint colors are just luscious, i might have to steal a couple (even though we JUST had all the interior repainted... maybe I'll wait a year or two).

I love it! What color is this, exactly? I would love to bring some bring yellow into my kitchen, but with white cabinets and black granite countertops (that we cannot afford to replace at the moment), I fear it would look very bee-like. Well done here!

I love the minimalism! I feel like I am constantly getting rid of stuff here and there, but our family home still feels quite cluttered. Also, if I had that shower I would shower all day long. Like others, I am wondering how they deal with a little toddler running around on concrete floors with so many sharp-edged pieces of furniture. Do they use corner guards? The thought of a child that age, walking/running unsteadily, and landing head-first on the hard concrete floor (or worse, face-first into one of those sharp corners - I've seen it happen) makes me cringe.

Wow! I love it! It makes me wish I wasn't so arachnophobic - I am afraid of painting any walls dark because then I wouldn't be able to spot the occasional spider, especially in the dark.

Great tips for washing all the wool sweaters that my MIL knits for us! Of course, I wouldn't purchase anything that would require handwashing - that's the opposite of streamlining.

Hmmm. I agree that the before was kinda "granny," but it was also warm. Bright and white is refreshing, but keeping the darker floors would've toned down the sterility. I do like the green accent and the recess lighting and think the new room is aesthetically interesting, though.

why not just try it out yourself? buy yourself a small quantity of whole beans and grind them up yourself, and do a taste-test comparison with some store-ground beans (some stores will let you grind whatever quantity you like). It might not make much of a difference to you.

I love, love, love the sheer number of options available for diapering these days! Not only do we have everything from Pampers to biodegradeable disposable dipes, but also a ridiculously fabulous array of cloth diapers. We're on kid #2 and have used all kinds: diaper service prefolds , disposables, pockets, cotton and synthetic AIOs, flats, prefolds, PUL covers, wool covers, and fitteds.

I'm a SAHM to my two boys so I have the luxury of choosing whatever system works best for me, which currently is: 1) flat folds with Thirsties covers for at-home use, including naps (they wash up better than anything and dry in no time at all, also make fantastic burp cloths - and folding them is not rocket science), 2) bumgenius AIOs for night sleep and for short trips outside the home, 3) disposables for packing in the diaper bag (less bulk!) and for when I'm too lazy/sleep deprived to bother with the flats.

A note about potty training: early potty training was one of the reasons we chose cloth for my first, but since we mainly used prefolds with him, I think he actually got accustomed to the feel of a wet diaper. When we started potty training him at 2.5 yrs, he didn't seem to mind at all the feel of either a wet dipe OR wet underpants. Go figure! :)

One thing I love about cloth - I'm reusing everything for my second, and plan on selling my stash when we're done. Except for the flats - they make awesome cleaning cloths.

My husband and I have this debate all the time. He's a hobby woodworker and comes from a family of carpenters and woodworkers. He grew up in the house his father built, with exposed beams and lots of exposed wood (mostly pine). They all believe painting over wood is sacrilege.

I definitely appreciate the unmatched beauty of wood, but I'm really picky. Some woods just get ugly with time, and some dark-wood furniture can really bring down a room, especially if it's big. I definitely wouldn't paint over a piece of furniture made out of bird's eye maple or purpleheart, but if it's made out of some old, ugly pine or oak - gimme the brush!
