I keep the cats off of kitchen counters and places where I have breakables. They are smart enough to know where they are allowed and not allowed - I find that if they do jump up on the kitchen counter it turns out the water bowl is empty and they were just getting my attention the most efficient way possible.

It only takes one move into a 5th floor walk-up while you have the flu to sell you on pro movers forever!

I feel like once you're out of your 20s (and not in grad school or something) it's pretty hard to ask friends to do a bunch of heavy lifting in exchange for pizza or donuts. I will enlist their help (or family) to watch the truck during loading/unloading, help with packing or unpacking, and general moving-day moral support.

Invest in a Furminator. More than brushing or combing, it pulls out all the dead hair and your cat will shed a LOT less. Also, during particularly sheddy times, I put old towels on the sofa and he prefers to lounge on those anyhow.

I painted a bedroom indigo once and LOVED it. I would suggest switching all your bedding to mostly white though - it made for a crisp contrast. You should also use a reflecting paint finish - not matte, but satin finish. The darkness didn't feel oppressive or cavelike at all, rather it felt cozy and peaceful.
