totally pro-lamp. for the naysayers, just use a lamp that's easily washable...not some special priceless lamp, that'd be ridiculous.

oof, so good. Though, I wanna hang your queens and kings pictures, and get the stuff off your records (they're gonna bend and get ruined!). Then again, I have the front of a vintage television, and a broken acoustic guitar leaning against the wall in my hallway, so who am I to judge?

@Dollface, framers often refer to acrylic as "plexiglass". It's like "Kleenex", the brand became a synonym.

@D2 pad, framing grade acrylic is much different than the junk they fit Ikea frames with. It's much thicker and has better clarity.

As a framer, I say glass for everything under 36x48. plexi for kid's rooms and over-sized pieces, or people who tend to move a lot.

and of course, glass breakage can be avoided better when items are hung correctly.

You could also take it to a frame shop to be dry-mounted (when they stick a poster in a vacuum press to mount it to foamcore) and cut up. Or just dry-mounted, then you could cut it yourself with a ruler and utility knife. Then you could stick up the pieces with removable heavy duty double stick tape/pads.

might be cheaper/easier, and a similar effect.

I want to re-hang everything on the walls...the individual pieces are hung too high, the grouped pieces are too close together and/or don't have a very pleasant composition. In the living room, I'd lower the piece behind the couch about 2 feet, then hang a clock or something else roundish above it. To the left, I'd take the picture with the eyeball and put it lower and in the blank space between the red chair and the cabinet. Then I'd put a mirror above the cabinet to reflect light from the windows. After that, lower the portrait of the kids, so it interacts with the chair, lamp and bookshelf.

I could go on, but those are easy fixes.

Very cool place with neat stuff...but the spacial reasoning is lacking.

You know, the felt is actually used just to cushion the jar, so it doesn't dull your scissors or make a lot of noise when you drop things in for storage. The link to the Martha Stewart page explains this pretty clearly...and the post is from 2003.

It has nothing to do with jar cleaning.

red really is oppressive. I'd recommend a light salmon, kinda like this: http://www.porterhousedesigns.com/colorsizzle/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/southernaccents.jpg

or pretty much anything from this palette would work: http://www.materials-world.com/paint-colors/pratt_and_lambert/color/pratt-and-lambert-color-01.htm

whoa, wow, that looks so terrible! I agree with the white accessories thing, white bedding and white curtains...maybe simple lace. maybe decorate with smooth light colored stones, and I'm for some reason picturing drift wood ....maybe a rug like this:http://www.expressgiftservice.com/images/products/middleGifts-Floral-Design.jpg

or anything that ties in some of the color in a more subdued way.

also, I live in an attic, and I've found that putting the head of the bed on the short wall opens up a lot of the space. it seems like it would be weird, but it's actually quite comfortable and opens up more usable floor space.

it's true, blueprints would have perfectly straight lines. but architects' sketches often have wavering lines....

so it doesn't really matter, cabinet looks awesome, who cares if the reference isn't perfect?

@mrterle, yes! totally. aw, I loved that magazine.

I like silhouettes, but I hope they don't suffer from over saturation and end up a trend that is forever branded as late 2000s home decor like the yin yang symbol in the 90's or something. blech*.

*note to self: trick people into thinking yin yangs are cool again....

as a professional picture framer who frequently deals with antique and vintage frames and artwork, I can tell you that hanging paintings in the bathroom like that will ruin them. The frames will also get ruined, the wood and plaster will start to expand as they take in water, and start to crack. There's also a bunch of pieces of paper tacked to the wall that will mildew and curl up. That wooden piece so close to the tub will also be ruined in time by the humidity. Unless it's a desert climate, the artwork/frames/furniture are completely water-sealed regularly, and the door is never closed during showers...then maybe it could work. Looks cool, but it's unreasonable.

Seems like people are upset by the negative comments, but I can understand why there are some...I think when you present the home of someone who is a stylist, the bar is raised, and the decor of this home just doesn't reach that bar for me. The flimsy curtain rods are what really ruins most of the rooms though, and could be easily eliminated.
